Anyway what's the relevance to the wider thread? :)

9.xyz just sold for $175,000

Sometimes things are not what they appear to be :)

Yes, lets not forget the guy that runs xyz is working hard to promote it

What easier way than by just making up a fake big sale.

It's certainly an interesting viewpoint. How would you feel about it?

When I see a name I like on domainlore at a good price I think I might bid at, by the finish it's usually a few hundred hundred over that, so realistically I would be priced out.

You have to draw a line somewhere.

If I have a "perceived dislike" for a company, I won't give them my money.

Nominet is a unique position where the available options are limited... for now.

If Nominet start using some of that money to promote the brand, getting the name out there, pushing awareness maybe my view will change, but at the moment... nope.

I read that and thought it an interesting response. You wouldn't bid on domain names solely because of your perceived dislike for where the resulting money might end up being spent?

Just interested as to why prices can seem very low on Acorn and DomainLore. Would be good to see more bidding rather than oh that was cheap.

As always, you can't make rules out of exceptions. I could apply the exact same reasoning to any extension, highlight just a few sales to claim the TLD is being 'successful'. Flukes don't make a market.

Seriously, there is a lot more value and credibility in .uk than in .xyz. Anybody who is in doubt about that needs to drop out of domaining now ;)
In my view, .xyz will never be a credible extension. The roisterous marketing doesn't change the fact. I think it's mostly a fad, and it's going to lose steam at some point. Previously-released extensions like .mobi, .co, .asia, .me etc have recorded large sales too, but look where they are now...

The value of TLDs is not driven by sales, but by development. For that you need a critical mass of end users willing to put up quality websites. By that measure I don't think that new extensions are doing too well.

I think there's something in the numeric .com and a few other extensions at the moment but not the others (that does not mean you can't sell them which is different), that said we did sell some numeric and some other domains over xmas to some Chinese gents, for which I cannot disclose the exact prices but lets say over 5 figs in total.

It never ceases to amaze that either I don't get it, or other people still don't get what has value and what apparently does not, going by DL, AD & sedo sales
