I have just purchased a pronounceable 4 LLLL letter .com via Godaddys auction system for less than £20, in domain terms this domain was nearly to free.

Looking at past sales it seems that 4 pronounceable LLLL.com's either fetch great sums or have very little value. Has the market cooled for short trendy .com domains?

Depends on the actual domain. For example HQXV.com is a difficult combo, there may not be a lot of end users for a domain like this (even in China). Reseller value may as low as $20.
Exceptions do occur, but it can easily turn into a speculative (and costly) game. I have seen domainers dropping them by the hundreds, which suggests that the holding costs were not offset by the sales.

Without knowing the actual domain, if you paid £20 that means there was little competition from other domainers. Normally this kind of domain (short/4L/etc) is monitored by domainers. So maybe you paid what the domain is actually worth.
Good luck :)
