Ok guys, I'm after an honest opinion...

Am I wasting my time on nom-steer?

Is there any value in it?

Do you want me to press for an implementation date for the proposed combined Nominet forum/mailing list?

Personally my vote goes for a forum any day of the week, with those who wish to suscribe to a particlar thread via email as an option being available.

yours - reaching out for some sanity ;)

Sneezy.

I've set a mail rule to bung them into a folder to filter later if and when I get time, so in my opinion a forum would be good as long as there was the ability to be notified by email to a topic you were watching (but that's standard in most forum software)

I think it should be in Forum format. I'm sure there would be more take up by members if they could contribute to the threads they were interested in instead of having to wade through <such and such said> emails.

That wouldn't be enough for me. I'd want the ability to read messages in plain text email. If I have to go to a web page to read messages then it doesn't work for me when I'm on a beach in Greece using a laptop connected to a mobile via bluetooth. On a windy day!

I believe the plan is to have a forum and a mailing list that works side by side seamlessly...

I can't wait for the forum. I will be saving my wisdom for nom-steer until then.

Hazel - if it's windy on the beach won't you get sand in your laptop?

Does forum software allow for a subscriber to be notified of the start of any new thread? Or does the user have to browse the web pages looking for threads they might want to be subscribed to? As you've probably guessed I am not in favour of any system that requires me to load a web page or three in order to see what topics are being discussed.

Forum all the way. I've got mail rules set up, but trawling through long email threads trying to work out what people are actually discussing can get fairly confusing, and finding important issues amongst the diatribe that seems to have become more prevalent recently has become an increasingly time consuming event.

Member participation should increase if things were to go that way, which can only be a good thing, because at the moment it seems that it's just the usual suspects who reply to email after email which clearly misrepresents the membership base to some extent.

I have asked Nominet about this today and they have confirmed that it's currently being worked on and they hope to have it up and running in May (that's May 2008!).

That will be a forum and mailing list combined in order to keep both the laggards and the Web2.0ers happy.

How exciting

the laggards

That's a bit unfair. It's not that us 'laggards' can't keep up with new-fangled developments such as fora. Some of us are even here and posting to one.

The problem is that once one is away from a broadband connected machine it can then become a problem to download multiple web pages in order to read messages.

I am pleased to hear that Nominet intends to cater for all preferences and look forward to browsing the new Forum when it is up and running. Unless I am away from my desk, in which case I will appreciate the old fashioned alternative put in place for us 'laggards'.

Go on Hazel, admit that you would have said "forums" had it not been for Clive Feather

Forum for sure. Then we can all skip the 'ad hominem' and 'ad nauseam' threads :D
