spending a lot of money on 'not quite' domains that are attributed with a large market or popular object but not really a search pharase or keyword that a user would search for.

And then, because it sounds similar.. well, you know.. :D
 
May not always be a bad thing, especially if it's used purely for affiliate marketing. It will be less competitive than the more popular term(s), therefore easier to rank and quicker to get a return on investment.
