I've been using the oculus rift dk2 for a couple of years now as I've been experimenting with it and unity and playing elite (although the text is pixellated). I'm looking at the current Oculus Rift but the problem is my gaming machine is a bit low specced for it (gtx 970 windows 7) and I really didn't want to go to windows 10 as I hate using it on other machines.
Has anyone got a current Oculus and could maybe confirm if it's worth the financial and os upgrade?

Not really. I wrote a VR asteroids game with it just to get to grips with the C# interface. I'm more interested in the practical uses. However really upgrading would just be for a better experience. With regards to unity if I was serious about development firstly I'd have someone design the assets (my blender experience is good for creating the models but my artistry is awful) and secondly I'd probably move on to the unreal engine now.

What sort of practical uses if you don't mind me asking ? Remote interface stuff ?

Not social aspects - more for architecture/travel/real estate.

No no that's purely for... um... research purposes. Anyway decided to go for it - been upgrading to windows 10 but on a separate drive with everything else disconnected. Then it's going to be another 350 euros for a graphics card and 450 euros for the rift. I hope it's worth it :p Funnily enough I spent the same amount of money a few years ago getting the dk2 and a gtx970. Looks like it's going to be a 2/3 yearly expense at this rate.

Its the Moore's law of expense

My 1080ti and Titan XP are already out of date!

An update. I didn't have to upgrade my graphics card (works fine with a 970) but I did order a 4 usb3 card (with 4 controllers - not 1) from amazon. This is pretty far from the DK2 and I must say I was worried I'd overhyped it in my mind but it has actually exceeded that. I experienced dissociation after using it for a few hours in one session - had a strange feeling when back in 'reality' that my hands weren't my own and was secretly disappointed that they couldn't do much. That disappeared in a couple of hours but I think we're entering a phase where people are going to start performing strangely after continued use. Just look at reviews of GORN. Really this just confirms my belief in simulation theory :p Hope I'm still around in 20 years to see how these things have progressed. I was writing a game of asteroids battle royale a couple of years ago - never finished it but got all the mechanics working. This is going to be great in VR - will give it away when done.
