I wonder if Nominet should explicitly reserve .com.uk before the release of .uk?

They can never issue names under .com.uk because that would be the most confusing extension ever (much worse than .uk for mix-ups with .co.uk) but it would stop anyone else from doing so and muddying the waters.

Not to mention that they might be able to set a redirect at the root level (my tech skills are a bit weak here, so perhaps somebody can provide more clarity) such that *.com.uk would automatically go to *.co.uk

In other words, no actual domains under .com.uk ever exist so there's nothing to own, renew, sell etc., but the entire *.com.uk hierarchy is populated with "theoretical" domains that act purely as automatic redirectors (not sure how better to describe it)

So you type in www.example.com.uk and the browser bar changes instantly to www.example.co.uk - you can never stop at www.example.com.uk because there's no such thing...

Might be a nice little courtesy for Nominet to extend to the .co.uk namespace.

Of course, if they don't do it now they can't do it later.

NOTE: I would NEVER be in favour of .com.uk domains actually "existing" or being issued "for real", because of the gigantic potential for confusion.

Ok, granted, .uk is the big issue and this is minor. But it's still the last chance to "fix" this. If somebody acquires .com.uk and starts selling subdomains, that's one more source of confusion. There is precedence, because Nominet has blocked com.co.uk from being registered.

"Can never" isn't the same as 'unlikely to' though is it? There will be unnecessary confusion over .uk . That hasn't stopped us from being where we are right now on account that it fills the nominet coffers. Something else to negotiate further down the line perhaps? I'm sure they'll reserve it. Fast forward a few years and if everyone is comfortable with .uk and .co.uk maybe they'll have another think.

It's such a pity Nominet did not role back there .uk proposals
after such a defeat on their version 1 .uk proposal
and ask for real ideas on developing the UK namespace.

Your idea would have been one of those ideas like what to do with .gb,
what about if Scotland devolves,
what about .eng,
what about .<county>.uk to create millions of local geographic domains,
what about opening .net.uk to all,
what about other 2nd level domains as advocated strongly by Invincible
that all could be debated fully to see what direction the UK namespace goes in.

Instead we are stuck with .uk as the only option offered by Nominet!
