Hi, a while ago, I bought some domains, I didn't know anything about domain transfers then, and assumed that as soon as the other person pushed the domains to you and your name was in the Who-Is, you owned them. I'm not too bothered about most of the domains I bought from the seller, as they were mostly rubbish and were not going to be used to make money from, but one of the names was a .co.uk.

After joining here and finding out about transfers, I aksed the seller to transfer the domain to me via Nominet, they said they had never heard of nominet, but would try to find out about it, it then went quiet for a while, I heard nothing from the seller, I sent them another email which I never got a reply to, so where do I stand now, anything I can do to get this .co.uk transferred to me?

Obviously, I have control of the domain name as he pushed it to my Dynadot account, but the sellers details are still listed as the registrant, what can I do now to get it changed to my registrant details?

In theory:

Change the TAG on the domain to a registrar on here, they can then amend the admin email address to yours. The domain should then show up as a sub account in your Nom account, you should then be able to login and transfer the domain to yourself.

I say in theory as this could potentially be seen as domain theft.

Failing that you could DRS the seller and hope that he doesn't respond - cost = £200, if he responds it will be £750.

Actually I'm not sure if that would work, you may need to do the first part then transfer it to someone else and get them to transfer it back to yourself.

yep its pretty easy if you dont mind paying the £11.75 fee. Just update the email address to your own and click on the lost password link on Nominet. They will then allow you to login to that domain and transfer it.

So much for security :(

Indeed, it's a hole that needs plugging. Maybe they should request signed transfer forms and ID when someone wants to change the admin email address :)

@ Aquanuke, I'm not sure I understood what you were saying there.

Currently, when I do a Who-Is for the domain, it shows his name:

Domain name: xxxxxxxxxxxx.co.uk

Registrant: xxxxx xxxxx

Registrant type: UK Individual

Registrant's address:
Box 701
San Mateo
CA
94401
US

When I look at the domain in my Dynadot control panel, and go to "set contacts", it has my Dynadot account details as for:

registrant
admin contact
technical contact
billing contact

I click to submit to set my contact details for the domain, but they still shows his details, that's the bit i didn't understand where you said:

Just update the email address to your own and click on the lost password link on Nominet.

Update what email address, somewhere other that in the "set contacts" part? I can't see anything else to change in the control panel

You will need to contact Nominet and ask them to resend a welcome email to the Admin contact email address.

So much for a straightforward, trouble-free, automated system!

A lot of registrars will probably not have the option of changing the admin email address from the control panel. That's why I suggested you will probably need to move the domain to a registrar on here who can change it for you.
