page size?

just wondering what the best size is for a webpage?
the program i use is set to:
width 750 pix
height 1000 pix

this has big borders either side and im not wanting those, but im not sure what to set them to for the best result?

I usually go for 980px wide as most people use 1024x768 or higher - fits nicely

I favour slightly smaller to allow my sites to look ok on mobile/pda/smart phones etc, so I aim for 780 which seems ok for most uses.

I have a very simple layout for most of my sites. For the header, main menu and footer I use 100% tables. In the main body, I have another 100% table, but split into three cols. First col is 260px, second 700px, and third is no width specified so just uses the rest of the screen. Effectively I'm designing to 960px which makes use of the wider screens many people now have, but I will also use any further additional space with the overflow column. If it's clearer, look at my hotels in Bath site to see it in action.
