I´ve see this on name.com, 123 reg and a couple of other domain sellers. Pre register for your .name domain and they´ll try and get it for you....

What do you think the best strategies are for this? Are there preferred companies who seem better at this than others or would you sign up for the same names with as many as possible?

I´m after 4 or 5 specific names.

Based on past performance, DomainMonster.com have a fairly good track record.

They caught correo.es (mail in spanish) sometime back, when .es went first-come, first served.

Think I'll be giving .xyz and Co a miss though :).

Added:

As the primary objective of this appears to be to make the registries and registrars lots of cash, anything generic and likely to be wanted by more than one party, will almost certainly be auctioned or carry "premium" registration fees.

If you're after something like davesplumbing.whatever, pre-reserving at multiple registrars will likely work.

Domain Monster prior to host europe's ineptitude did well for me in the .co, whether they are now is another matter.

They got me steve.co my surname.co and a bunch and some generics, all which have been dropped, since explain no its .co not .com or .co.com or .co.uk just .co got real old real quick.

Just like .co.uk drop catching, the best strategy is to pre register them with every single registrar that allows for payment on success. If you can find 10 registrars offering free pre regs, book with 10. If you can find 100, book with 100. There's no such thing as having "too many chances" when it comes to catching domains.
