Here are some of my questions:

1. Is any form of ‘Domainer Association’ in existence? …if so, does anyone have any details?
2. If there isn’t one, does anyone think it would be a good idea to set one up?
3. If one was set up, how many would be interested in helping set it up and/or joining?

Please post comments and/or participate in the Poll. :)

Many thanks in advance…

Another forum set up DNOA which shows little interest and I've seen posts on there about it being dead.

However, i like the idea of it, which would expand on the trading rating system I run here.

What benefits do you perceive and how would you run it?

…I’m glad you like the idea admin, as I was thinking that it would be pretty essential to get you on board. ;)

…Benefits: Well as long as we’ve got the necessary ‘experts’ on board, there could be loads (for both the experts and the individual member).

Examples:

1. Dedicated Trader Experts.
2. Dedicated Valuation Experts.
3. Dedicated Legal Experts.
4. Dedicated SEO Experts.
5. Dedicated Web Design Experts.
6. …And so on, and so on.

For a small annual fee each member would have access to these central ‘resources’, which would either give some ‘free’ advice or help at a ‘member’s rate’. In addition, having a group of individuals represented centrally by ‘one voice’, would have a profound effect by adding that extra layer of professionalism and representation (Accredited member of…, represented by..., etc, etc).

…How to run it: Well as you say, it could expand on what you have already here. Add it as an ‘AD Member Option’, who would get a reduced fee and also have a dedicated website for it, where people could join direct. Meetings would need to be held and Chairman, Treasurer, etc would need to be elected, as well as setting up all the legal bits, but I’m sure there are those here would are willing to get involved and help out. :)

Acorn seems a pretty good Domainer's Association to me!

Would a formal association give us much that the forum doesn't?

Seems it represented our views pretty well during the EGM. The domainers, Nominet, and the PAB have a good bidirectional conversation going through it on various stuff, help each other quite well.

I can see someone investing time setting something up, maybe for a fuzzy objective that might actually be covered by the forum. Anyone see any functions it doesn't satisfy/anything I am missing?

…Nick, there’s nothing “fuzzy” about it, I can assure you, in fact quite the opposite. Forums have there place and they help, but it cannot be said that they are always ‘focused’ on the task at hand. Also it’s not just about Nominet, in fact we should worry less about what we can do for Nominet and worry more about what Nominet can do for us. We’re not their ‘employees’, they’re ours!!! We pay um, then they want us to do their ******* work for them, bloody cheek. (Note to self: must stop going into rant mode ;) ).
What I’m suggesting (and I think admin is in agreement) is that we ‘add value’ to what we already have… i.e. building on our strengths as a group. That way we can all benefit together as one (hopefully) united group!

I’m not the best at conveying the message I’m trying to get across, but the gist is that on our own we may do fine, but as a group we’ll do a lot better! Yes the forum helps, but I can tell you now, a well run association with good professional well meaning members can go a long, long way and without the distractions that a forum brings.

There’s a lot of well meaning individuals on this forum (and I include myself in that category), but we don’t always ‘really’ know what we’re talking about. However, if those of us who wished to get together in the way I’ve described, I’m sure we would be a much more effective, productive, profitable and stronger force than we are at the moment.

As I said, it’s an idea and it involves the dreaded ‘Teamwork’, but hey it works… Do you really think it’s 'just' about what you know (you can’t know it all), or is it ‘really’ about who you know (because they just might)???

Ponder on that thought…

Hi Guys and Galls
I can confirm we have a arranged for some usa firms to travel to uk in August for the domain show.
We will be arranging the booking of the hotel in the next couple of days
the area location will be london.

We hope to have advertisers /Legal advise/domain Registers/ ect ect
Yours

Tommy

Personally I like the low key approach. All we "dont" need is some headline in the newspapers about how much can be made in domains and everyone and their dog will be regging names. Great !!. Nope best do it quietly and stealthily I say.
An association might be good idea but need to make it more than just a meeting down the pub its got to have clear objectives.

its will be booked in a hotel with speakers and you will be able to network.

...Domaining has so, so many facets, not just that of domain sales. I myself (and I hope others) would like to see that we come together as a community, each with our own strengths to make life just that little bit better, easier and profitable for us all. ;)

Cooperation is not an enemy here, but I would agree that we 'do not' need to start shouting about what we’re doing in the press… A quiet revolution will do just fine by me.
