I am very pleased to see the proposed upgrade from Nominet:

Many things have been long overdue like:

Reduced paperwork

We will no longer be sending confirmation of registration letters to registrants. Instead, on registration, new registrants will be sent a welcome email with log in details for their new account.

Maybe EPP is also finally on the way:

EPP is an alternative system for registering domain names that uses XML over a secure connection to our server. We are currently developing our EPP system for launch in July 2007

However........

I am still worried about the effect this will have on registrars businesses if Nominet gets control of registration fees and lowers the £80 direct tag fee:

Even if Nominet has said in the email:

The system improvements do not replace the need for registrants to act through registrars, nor do the changes alter the processes for direct registration or renewal.

Also if Nominet is no longer sending out letters doesn't that save up to £1 on the cost of each registration? Won't Nominet now make even more money?

Overdue is a bit of an understatement in my view.. but I don't think they committed to a timescale ever so probably not technically.. but it should have been done a long time ago. Pleased to see it going now..

To be honest from what I gather, Nominet really doesn't want more direct registrations.. It wouldn't surprise me if they preferred not offering them at all.
