Screen resolution & widescreen format...

I have just one monitor 1920 x 1200.

I tend to set site widths at around 990-1000px

That's an important point, it's all very well having high resolution monitors but in my experience most people don't have their browsers 'maximized'.

We typically set site widths at between 950 and 970 (based on almost all surfers have a screen resolution above 1000 wide.)

That's insane! Although it does look a bit staged to me, nobody could really work with monitors in those positions could they?!??!

Apparently this guy, Stefan Didak's Home Office works like that... mad isn't it.

To answer the reason for the poll, we develop mostly for 1000 width, but occasionally in the 900 - 1000 range, depending upon the content.
