Should Nominet get there own Forum?

DO you all think nominet should get there own forum then people can discuss heated things on there rather put acorndomains at risk every 5 minutes.

The trouble is, if it were me running the forum I'd tell those complaining to sort their heads out and take the person who made the comment to court and stop being so silly.

It's a simple rule, don't mention personal names or companies, if people stuck to that then fair enough. Talk about a possible problem but no names no pack drill, got real bother? ring nominet up.

Admin does good on here, it's a nice helpful and friendly environment with no hatred and it needs to stay that way, don't slaughter or slag others and I think all will be happy with open debate but no names no pack drill, got bother? ring up nominet.

No, they don't need their own forum and if they did that's for them to decide, I don't think acorn needs any traffic taking away from it and nominet bods in individual capacity seem happy enough posting amongst friend and foe.

I mentioned this to Nominet's new Director of Communications a while back.

It was also mentioned on Nom-Steer a month or so ago, I think the overwhelming view on there was that they preferred mailing lists. Clearly, though, that was just the views of those who used the mailing lists. In my mind a forum would encourage more to participate in Nominet stuff and voice their views.

Maybe it could be done in parallel with a mailing list - not sure how practical that would be.

i dont think mailing lists are any use, i dont want hundreds of peoples replies all the time. I think nominet should then they can actively see what peoples views and comments are without coming here, that might leave Acorn to be used what it is meant to be used for, discussing domains and not arguing all the time.

Just my view.

Maybe I've missed summat in the couple of days I've been away but why do you think heated things put acorndomains at risk?

For instance, my purpose in being on acorndomains is to correct some of what I perceive as the misinformation (about Nominet) that is prevalent on here; IMHO it is not in anybody's interests to think something that just isn't so. They don't have to agree with Nominet, that's their prerogative, but surely it's better to have an open discussion rather than let these differences of opinion go unanswered?

Nobody (on my side anyway) is looking to put anybody at risk, although I have to say that some comments (and accusations) do cross the lines of decorum at times; but I'd still rather have the chance to put another viewpoint.

With the greatest of respect laskos, I was asked to come on here by another acorndomainer to put the record straight on various issues; but anyway, I ain't the one starting the arguments. I simply offer facts (as they are written); it's people with preconceived notions that won't accept facts. I'm happy for people to disagree and debate my comments but I'd be even more happy not to argue with anyone; but if people ask Nominet related questions and/or don't understand the rules and regulations governing .uk domain names, isn't it better that misconceived information is corrected?

As an aside, this is a public forum with many different threads, and all I am doing is offering a public service; one of communication and clarification.

Don't be so cynical olebean, work with it and don't denounce everything just because you don't agree with it. Cynicism never changed anything; but realism can. Be realistic in your expectations and be surprised at what can be achieved with mutual cooperation.

I just voted YES in this rather small poll. I did so because I believe it would be a good idea for Nominet to run it's own forum where non-member registrants and others with an interest in .uk could post their views. I did not do so because I feel that "Nominet" people should not post here or because I feel that Nominet issues should not be posted here.

What with all the other things we have to do, it has not been that high a priority to fix this, though we do always keep an eye on it. Any solution would need to combine web based forums with mailing list capabilities since the majority of vocal members want that. I probably also look for some advanced features - like reputation scores - I'm sure that would go down well.

If anyone has any ideas then the full list of requirements is
- integrates web based forums with email list server so that people can participate entirely by email, entirely on the web or mixed
- allows us to manage the membership list through an API or command line utilities as we hold this in our own database
- runs on Java, preferrably in Apache/Tomcat
- can provide RSS feeds
- supports Oracle as the backend database
- if possible then support Freemarker as the templating engine

If thats the requirements you will need to build your own - even http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/modifications.php can't cope with that
