Hello,

Does anyone know what determines site ranking with Yahoo, Google etc?
I know meta tags, keywords etc.
But is there anything extra why a site will appear top and another will appear on page 2 for example?
I've noticed a site of mine(not sure if I can list it, re: advertising forum rules) has now gone on to page 1 for results for certain search terms relating to it.
This only happened within the last few weeks but was listed with yahoo before this. I haven't changed anything. Could it be that it was manually indexed by Yahoo?
I'm using frames in this site which I know is a bit of a no-no. But I am now moving up and I'm listed 14th for a one word search term now (10th for two word).

Any ideas how I've moved up from being listed but not showing on any results for searches before to now quite high for searches.

Also anything else I could do? :?
(Remember my 1st question: What makes No.1, No.1?)

Thanks

Can of worms .co.uk...

Number of factors. Based mostly on relevance. Google has been criticised in the past for ranking sites on content, rather than relevance. So in my experience you have to make your site as relevant to the sites core theme as possible.

This then goes brings up backlinks, because if your site has a lot of other sites linking to it then it is considered relevant to other people (word of mouth) considered the most important "human" recommendation - something theat googlebot can't really recreate.

The there is code layout. A crap code confuses the spiders and it might give up. The code should allow the spiders to go very deep into your site.

Like I said can of worms, there are thousands of people who consider them experts, but it's really hard work and trial and error.

yep, you said it - can of worms. The most simple and most effective way that I have found of getting a listing on google is to link from another site that is already been spidered by google i.e. maybe even this forum, by putting your site link in your signature ;-)

The easiest way of getting a "good" listing on google is to have a link from a site that is both relevant to your site and has a good page rank. You can tell what page rank (x/10) a site has if you download the google toolbar and put your mouse over the page rank bit.

I am no expert but these are the methods I have used with a fair amount of success to get both my sites spidered and some good listings for targeted keywords in Google. The others - Msn, Yahoo etc, I do not have a clue but I generally think if Google likes you then you'll get a lot of traffic anyway and whatever else comes is a bonus.

I've read somewhere a few days ago that it was all down to link popularity, and nothing else, getting as many relevant links as possible to your homepage.

I'm not sure wether or not external links (ie links from other sites) count better than internal links..I'd like to know if anyone has the answer.

I had one of the guys at work do a site survey on cheapflights.com. They've got over 40000 links to their home page mostly from within their own site, hence their high search engine positions.

Thanks for your replys all!

I have submitted it to some other "Add your Listing" free websites.
Maybe this then did something Atlanta1, because I haven't changed my site.

Better keep doing it! :p

One other thing....

As this site is in frames...Do I need to put the same metatags, keywords in every page or just the frameset page: (index.html)?

Don't use frames. They don't work very well with Google.

Yes, the ranking I quoted earlier was with Yahoo (UK only).
Google searches(UK only) don't show anything.

Just thinking of the work involved changing from frames....
Not a huge amount really as it's a small site.
Think I might do it soon!

yeah avoid frames its just as easy to use includes, well i'm a MS coder i have no idea if this is the same for linux / PHP?

Good work for a new site! and you havent over done the keyword meta tags, which personally I think they like as it doesnt look like your trying to beat the system!

Your a Cheeky Monkey!!

Joke for you...

Q: Why did the monkey go "ohh ohh ahh ahh"

Ohh ohh ahh ahh thats quite funny

Thanks guys for the feedback!
Yeah, it's a simple enough site and didn't really take that long to change over!

Funny joke btw...

one of the important factors google take into account is Link popularity and the ammount of incoming links into your site. Try and get your keywords in the anchor text of your links this counts a lot towrds ranking. For instance if you type in "liar" into www.google.co.uk it will bring up N010 and tony blair at number 1 and if you type in "Miserable Failure" into google you will get George W Bush biography this is not because they have these keywords on the site but because there are many IBLs with that words in the anchor text.

Another key factor with google is content and content that is unique mqake sure you are not duplicating your content.

have a look at Matt Cutts from Googles blog at http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/

and for more info on SEO visit www.webproworld.com its a great forum and possibly has some of the best pros in the industry giving advice

After writing all that out and submitting it i just realised that this post is from last year what an idiot I am!!
