SSL certificates for multiple sites

I see it being at least 2-3 years away before Google really uses this as a real big ranking factor (maybe with ecommerce sites needing it far sooner) for most sites. I think I'd be keeping my £1,400 and doing the SSL's in two years, I personally wouldn't be investing so highly in a "safer more private web" with no expected ROI.

But SSL's are available free of charge. Most of my sites are now on 20i hosting and SSL certificates are free and installed at the click of a button in your control panel. It's the future....

My point was that paying £700/year will not prove to be economically viable.

Why? That was for 75 active sites. None of us have any idea how much money they bring in (apart from Philip, of course), nor how they make their money. For all we know, the extra costs might be well worth absorbing.

At the same time, if they were developed on Windows then it could cost much much more than £700 to port them over to Linux (especially if they're custom, database-driven sites) and replicate the exact setup they have now. So it really shouldn't be surprising that Philip didn't choose that route.
