A client wants credit card facilities. The bank side is set up so now I need to do the server side.

Does anyone have good info on SSL.

Any information / recommendations on digital certificates - availability, range, pricings?

I've just checked verisign and they're the best - but very pricey.

I expect they're cheaper than Verisign. The web-based control panel is nothing to write home about, customer service does answer your e-mail. The instructions given for installing my certificate were reasonable.
How exciting can an SSL company be tho'.

Has your client got an internet merchant account with a bank? If so look at protx.com as a payment processor. You will not need a SSL then. Just done a site using them, very reasonable charges and helpful.

They have HSBC banking set up, and online authorisation activated. The cart is clickcartpro.

Just be aware with ProTx, because you also have to open a separate merchant account with a bank, you have both ProTx charges and whatever charges the bank levies on its merchant account.

If you're thinking of payment processors, there is also of course WorldPay.co.uk. IMO this has a much better admin area than the ProTx equivalent. ProTx has recently been hit by a few denial of service attacks although they have counteracted this with new software, you just get the impression they're a smaller outfit than WorldPay. I would also say that WorldPay setup is easier. However, cost might be an issue as charges are slightly higher I think.

Indeed, I have my Merchant accout with HSBC. If I had done it all via HSBC it would have cost a lot more than just having them as the merchant account and Protx as the gateway. To have done it all via HSBC it would have still cost £20 per month submission charge (same as Protx), but the credit card charge was 1% higher than using a third party gateway!! Had I gone totally via HSBC then I would also have needed a SSL cert. No problem, but extra expense.

World pay is MUCH more expensive as they charge an annual fee + a hefty transaction fee. Setup is easier with WP than Protx, but I have found the admin section at Protx fairly good.

I echo Dominion's feedback - we have got an HSBC merchant account but we use Protx to handle the online jiggery pokery as it works out cheaper than using HSBC for the full service.

Our SSL certificate is provided by http://www.rapidssl.com but we got it at a good discount from one of their resellers (http://www.servertastic.co.uk/ I think).
