I think the word 'strange' in this sort of context often has a negative connotation. If someone said that they had received a strange gift, my first interpretation would be that the choice of gift was strange i.e. not really fitting for the occasion implying that giving that thing as a gift was an odd thing to do.

I can see that it could also mean that the item itself was strange e.g. a strange painting and you might like collecting strange paintings.

'Unusual' would be much better because it doesn't carry the negative connotation.

Yes, i would say strange does sound negative, its nor something i would go for.

I did pick up 2 .gifts

As said, unique or unusual would be better. Strange is a bit weird but still catchy and nice. It should work for low-mid xxx.
