Hey all....

If you have a subdomain of your domain, do search engines take the 'whole' domain incl subdomain as its reference or just the domain itself?

e.g. is guildford.town/co/uk taken as the keyword... or will it be just the town part?

Your opinions gratefully received!

It's generally believed that keyword subdomains carry a weight between that of a domain and of a regular URL, but it's nothing like the exact match weight of having the right domain.

Eg, [guildford.town...uk] is marginally better than [town...uk/guildford], but neither come close to [GuildfordTown...uk] or even better [Guildford...uk]

It's also worth remember that linking multiple sub-domains is the same as linking multiple names - you could get hard hit with penalties if you get it wrong.... oh, and subdomains also have their own separate PR too.

I've seen a lot of threads suggesting hacks on partial names or using subdomains to make up desirable phrases, but I've never seen any real evidence that it works that much better from an SEO point of view than a regular URL.

Thanks Ty

sub domain for SEO

It's also worth noting that the most of the large SE's will bold the keywords in your URL if they match the users search query which are likely to increase your click through rates.

oh, and subdomains also have their own separate PR too.

That said ive also found that the primary domains reputation with the SE's plays a significant part in ranking for the terms associated with the sub domain.

Subdomain and subdirectory issue was very popular 2 years ago but now there is no difference if you are making your subdomain or sudirectory keywordrich then there is presence given by any search engines its now depends on how links are supporting that page.
