What would be your order of preference for domain extension that you would use for the following types of sites?

(h) indicates hyphenated domain.

1. Site targeting UK with mainly SEO traffic (eg affiliate mini-sites):

co.uk - org.uk - com - net - org

2. Site targeting UK with offline marketing/brand building (eg offline businesses, online retailers) :

co.uk - co.uk(h) - com - net - org - org.uk

1.
co.uk
com
co.uk (h)
org.uk
org
net

2.
co.uk
com
At a push, co-uk (h)

Wouldn't consider .net or .org. or .org.uk

A very short .net can work in specific instances with regards to #2 - typically where the TLD itself forms part of the branding/brand name. Examples include vps.net and vi.net

I'd totally agree with that. I can't stand the extension but would love to own inter.net, etc.
