This section is relevent...

As well as a policy group on the Soca proposal, Nominet is also convening one of the practice of "expired domain tasting".

This group will debate whether domain registrars can make money or analyse traffic to sites that are defunct.

Is this an extension of the current policy on deletion of newly registered domains, or it a more to the US style trend of domains requiring renewal (and potentially suspended?) domains having registrar default page enforced on their sites?

Get onto Nominet with your concerns over tasting, the more people provide input, the better picture they have to work on when formulating future policies.

As a domain owner, I'd not want to potentially have my domain re-pointing to a potential advert for a competitor if I forgot to renew it.
