Anyone have any recommendations for getting some PR done for a new site of mine?

I seem to remember someone on here a year or so ago that done quite well with his services but can't remember if who it actually was!

Either way, any recommendations?

I've not had any success using PR services - mrh included. Without fail, every single one of them has been a complete and utter waste of money.

Maybe you'll have better luck but I'd be looking to spend promotional budgets elsewhere.

Heard a few people saying the same thing (not targeted at mrh!). I just think sometimes it's down to a bit of luck but that's just my opinion.

The site is Fractionn.com - I want to spend more time improving it rather than thinking about doing the promotional side of things myself too.

The problem is a lot of major sites won't even link to sites they lift full stories from - so if you're lucky you'll end up with a bunch of useless non-links in some crap regional papers, maybe one of the tabloids if you're lucky (who don't link either).

If you're working with a huge budget then it might be worth it purely to then use these mentions (if you get them in the first place) in an 'as seen in...' section. If you actually need to show results and can't just write off money all over the place as 'marketing costs' with nothing to show for it... I'd look elsewhere.

With mrh I got nothing for my money. With a few others I've had similar. And one bunch of clowns proclaiming massive success (with a £2k budget being blown) because they got 3 mentions, and zero links. The best I had was an actual link in the Guardian or Telegraph, I can't remember which now as it was a few years back. But that was part of a 3 month contract, £2400 a month. And overall... the results were shit.

imo your design is going to massively hold you back - I mentioned this on another thread but it looks very amateurish. I realise you built the project to practice coding... but if you now want to try and make a run at turning it into a real business then the design really needs fixing.

I would suggest that putting £3k into a high end design would be a far better move for you at this stage. You could easily blow the same amount on press releases and see absolutely zero in return for it.

Good design + good domain = instant credibility... you're far more likely to be taken seriously / linked to if you fix those two points.

It was me who has used them twice, first time got awesome results, second time not as good but still decent and worth it.

It really is ALL about the angle and making it on topic, no matter how good a PR agency is if the story/product/site they are talking about aren't that interesting or relevant it won't get much coverage.

Issues you need to fix before you consider spending money on promotions:

  • Design - looks half finished
  • Company info - where is it? Needs corporate info listing in footer, phone numbers etc. All cheap to setup
  • Domain name - imo it needs changing. Clearly doesn't pass the 'phone test' which makes it look a bit amateurish. Fiverr have a similar domain to you... but own fiver.com too.
  • Social media - numbers there drastically need improving to look legit

None of the above are a major problem to fix... but all them in their current state stink of 'one bloke in a bedroom'. Thats fine if you have something brilliant and unique as the product... but you don't. Unless you're straight up paying people to link to you, all of the above are a big problem and 100% need sorting before you start spending money elsewhere imo.

But the good thing is none of them are expensive or hard to deal with - a brilliant design would be £3k. Set up a company online for £20 in 3 hours. Domain, well how long is a piece of string there I suppose. Social media - run a couple of cheap competitions to massively bulk out your follower numbers.

I've tried a few pr companies and never got any decent publicity. If I where you, I'd spend my money on the best content you can get for your site and try and make your site the most useful and interesting in its niche.

Your money is better off spent elsewhere - invest in other forms of online advertising; SEO, PPC, Media Buys, etc. - totally depends on your industry, of course.
