Top online threats for 2013 include cyber conflicts and ransomware

A big increase in malicious software which can hijack your computer and demand payment is just one of the threats that we could be facing in 2013 according to a top online security company.

Experts at Symantec have published their top five predictions of the online risks for the coming year. Top of their list is the expectation that “cyber conflicts” could become much more widespread. Political campaigners and activists may stage online attacks, with the risk that users could be caught up in process.

Another threat on the list is known as “ransomware”. This is where cyber criminals distribute malicious software designed to infect a computer and display a message, sometimes appearing to be from law enforcement, which demands payment before the user can continue.

Symantec also suggests that users’ increasing use of internet based storage, especially on mobile devices, could become an even greater target for hackers. The experts warn this is particularly risky for users who connect their own devices to work networks.

These tips should also help:

Never open emails, attachments or messages on social networks from people you don’t know. Delete them and empty the bin.
Install anti-virus software, keep it up to date and run regular security scans.
Make sure you are using the latest version of all your software, with the latest security patches.
Don't click on links in emails without checking where they take you. If you are sent a link from a business you know, browse directly to their site and check there.
Use different passwords for different networks or services, so then if one is compromised the others will still be secure.
Make sure you have a personal firewall installed and enabled.
Only download software from reputable sources. Free games and screensavers might be hiding malicious software.
