I have been asked to edit a website for a unknowledgable individual.

i can see the name is registered by 1&1 but they dont host the site
i thought it was heart but they claim not to know anything either

any ideas how to trace back a website to find where it hosted?

Name servers:
ns.mainnameserver.com
ns2.mainnameserver.com

Those nameservers are used for heartinternet hosting, if they don't host it then maybe your client bought hosting through a HI reseller

Have you tried running the domain through http://whois.domaintools.com/domain.co.uk - gives you some info about server.

eg. If you run gercia / .co .uk through (my domain), it shows it is hosted by HI using the nameservers you mention above

They should do, although they won't give you support - you will have to go through the original reseller.

the reseller has gone bust - i know this cause i reg'd his domain name ;)

Then you need to explain to heart the reseller is bust, and you wish to transfer the hosting to them directly. They should just do this without any hassle once they verify the reseller is toast.

Thanks have contacted heart again - perhaps they'll give a list of all the clients? ;)

thanks for all your help guys
appreciated

Nah, they wouldn't do that but they should be able to tell you who owns the account, the rootuser will be the reseller so it will look like

//reseller/home/user/public_html/

They should be able to tell you which reseller owns the account.

Have you looked on the webmail to see if they have branded it ? or looked on the control panel for branding or usernames ?

I just looked on my server for all domains, and it gives me a list like

Domain User Owner Date Created Package
dom.co.uk user0 rs2 Day Jan 0 00:00:00 2009 RS
dom2.co.uk user1 vh5 Day Jan 0 00:00:00 2009 VH
dom3.co.uk user2 rs2 Day Jan 0 00:00:00 2009 RS

So I can see the domain, the user (you), the owner (the reseller), when it was created, and what type of account they have.

I assume heart can see the same ?

the individual account - yes i know who owns that
and i know the name of the reseller, who branded all the aspects of the hosting account apart from nameservers.

fingers crossed the support person who gets the email has a little bit of gumption and can bury down to find out the info

regards
