.UK Announced

Yep, so it doesn't say it at all, .co.uk owners will be lumped in with everyone else in phase 2 along with .org.uk and .me.uk, registered company name holders etc etc - Nominet have generously acknowledged that owning/using an existing extension 'may' qualify as an unregistered right to that term!

Will only be lumped in if there is evidence of use.

Yep, completely different than stating .co.uk will be offered the .uk if there's no trademark! And it's not just about existing domain registrations, the unregistered rights phase goes beyond that and will no doubt cover a range of other rights such as registered company names.

Very good point. :) Why does it have to be {something}.uk? Why not {something}.verified.uk because a new extension such as that would convey much more of the supposed additional benefits of registering within this new extension. The reason, of course, is that hardly anyone would buy it. The real USP of {something}.uk (i.e. "direct.uk") is its reduced length hence perceived higher value and desirability.

Indeed Invincible - Then at least lets have Nominet Say - This is a "Big fat cash cow for us" and 5-10 years further down the line we may well screw over the subsequent .UK holders with a new trick.

I am just stating the obvious with my suggestion. But, it is Nominet that have chosen to present their justification for .UK as a road to a secure internet.

Wouldn't it be nice If they actually said - We Fu**ked up big time. That as a statement or something more presentable to the public eye....

I'm not naive enough to believe Nominet for one moment - but they must realise by choosing an almost defenceless argument, They are going to get shot to pieces...

You'd have thought they would have choosen their ground (weapon of choice) with a bit more common sense...

Next they will start to phase out the .co.uk's :p

I can't see that ever happening...

This happened in India years ago and Google India still use .co.in – they own Google.in, but it simply redirects to Google.co.in.

Most likely existing businesses using .co.uk will continue to do so for the most part, whilst new players will either use .uk or .co.uk. There's going to be lot of traffic leakage from the .uk to the .co.uk, and eventually visa versa – the sensible thing would be to try and secure both if at all possible.

Both .in and .co.in are still widely in used in India, and they did it at a far earlier, sensible stage. .co.in was nowhere near as established as .co.uk is now.

No No Invincible, We're British - The Temptation of Loads-of-Dosh and personal gain dosen't enter into it.

Could you imagine ICANN coming out with a similar trick to replace .com sometime soon. (net and org and the rest can stay)

Guess that would really upset the wrong end of the Boat

What happened to the trust that Nominet used in their marketing?

"It's about trust, if I go online and I see .co.uk I know about where they are from. I like that and I think our customers like that too"

http://www.agreatplacetobe.co.uk/

They are now saying .co.uk cannot be trusted ??

Maybe they should rename it thewrongsideoftown.co.uk - so tempted to reg that and redirect to their official site :p.

Are there any stats available that show the percentage of .uk domains that are registered to SME's, Corporates, Domain Traders, Affiliate Marketers etc ?

You mean as a breadown to those groups - Not a chance.

Though I'm sure some sampling has taken place

Has anyone any stats that show what percentage of co.uk domains are held by Domainers and are undeveloped?
