.UK Announced

You will find that .nz with the same proposal has been met with utmost rejection by businesses not the so called domainers.

The question is though, is there going to be enough businesses that complain to really make Nominet change their mind? I doubt it very much as the majority of legit business owners will not even know it has happened until its been rolled out.

If Nominet was to send out an email to everyone who has a .co.uk asking them to fill out the form then possibly something could be done but that's not going to happen is it...

That is why we need an EGM, members can vote down proposals in an EGM rather than leave to the board.

As far as I understand it...

46 of the top 100 online retailers in the UK are on .co.uk domains (the list is skewed towards .com because global retailers use a single site, multi-subdomain strategy e.g. apple.com, hp.com, and because some of the stores selling intangible products are location-independent. Also they've miscategorised Amazon which should have been listed as amazon.co.uk making it 47)

They should be informed of the submission process. It's business that will shut this down not the domainer community representing a few percent of total .uk registrations.

Guys I know Chris mentioned a link to my site calling for an EGM in an earlier thread and I wanted to keep you all updated.

We now have 42 signatures calling for an EGM. Some from people I have never heard of, so it is not just a domainers issue.

Where do I sign? I can't find the link.

More data...

23 of the top 100 sites visited from the UK (according to Alexa) are on .co.uk domains including major newspapers and banks.

(There's also 1 .co, 3 .gov.uk, 2 .org and 1 .ph site, the rest are on .com)

NOTE: A lot of the list consists of video and photo sharing sites, and porn sites, which are by definition global (see for yourself, don't take my word for it). If you mentally take those out the % of .co.uk sites is much more significant.

Day one it's had press coverage, BBC.

Well see, .nz will be the canary down the mineshaft (so to speak). Awaiting the report back.

If this drags on into the next week, I will fire up avoid.co.uk as the campaign focus site against this. Just because it can become cluttered on that.co.uk, we need to be very clear on what we are asking for. A crisp site that we can get businesses and non members to contribute to will also help.

I have been informed we need around 100 in total to call an EGM, we are currently up to 55 members calling for an EGM.

I think we can easily smash that 100 number, if we are half way there after 13 hours.

Unfortunately not mate, only members can call for an EGM and just trying to get a view on numbers at the moment.

We are aware though that non members are just as concerned by this as members are.

Signed. Assuming we think the 5% threshold is reached, what's the process for calling for an EGM?

I don't know the ins and outs of that 100% mate. But we have agreement from those that do and will all work together to put the correct procedures in motion.

Do we have to have a TAG to sign it? I've signed it anyway with NA as tag

surely anything to prevent an easy passage is helpful

Nominet should have a duty to make each and every domain holder aware of this consultation. They have made no efforts to make the wider public aware of it and that will suit them fine, let it go under the radar. The consultation lapses at the beginning of January when many businesses are on holiday.. As a business owner, i would not want to be put in a position where i might have to fight amongst other similar trademark holders for the same name in the new space that i currently own in the .co.uk having spent the last 10+ years branding.

Apologies Graeme I don't think I can support this EGM based on your point 1).

I am opposed to the whole idea. I do not wish to double up on registrations .co.uk and .uk. I am happy with the status quo.

Maybe we could take a poll?

Status quo or your statement to be tabled 1). to 7). ?
