I don't know about others but I would hope everyone could at least agree that the bottom line for Nominet is simply their own commercial gain .They know the take up of any additional third level extensions would be minimal, and therefore they are selling off the gold reserves .uk, unfortunately migrating it into the co.uk is not going to swell the coffers and is probably therefore not an option. However that arguement alone for them will become indefensible.

watching the chair of that meeting, it seemed obvious that this is a done deal. He seemed genuinely open; and when said they were doing this to stay competitive in the face of the onslaught of new extns; then I must say I think I believe him.
Extra dosh for nom and notoriety I think are fringe benefits.
So I for one think this will happen, the only open point is the release mechanism.

Piers didn't convey much confidence that submissions will be published in full. He said that it was not usual to publish them (nonsense) and what would we (participants and the public) do with them. I would READ them as I do not TRUST you that is what.
The only resounding support from the whole session was when the question was put why the board and employees of Nominet weren't on the panel and on stage doing the Q&A.

Well done Invincible don't agree with all your opinions but you at-least you contributed sensibly to the Q&A session.
It looks like Nominet have finally grown some balls and are looking forward not backward and that will mean change, which seems to upset so many on here.
The internet is still in the very early stages of development and change is always just around the corner domain speculating may well be a thing of the past in the not so distant future.
People need to remember that this is only a consultation spreading misinformation and scaremongering is making some look juvenile.

Your naive to think .uk won't be speculated. Because it will be and heavily. More so now in this era as the value of having the right domain is understood by many.
So your vested interest is a late comer looking to fill their boots with good inventory?

Not a late comer have made plenty of money from domains since the 90's selling to many on here but don't now have a large portfolio.
Do feel genuinely sorry for you as it would seem most of your portfolio is from acquisitions and not Drop-catching which I have strong feelings about.

I thought that was ridiculous. Late start, the late adendee, mic problems, feed problems, the fact that half of the time we couldn't hear what was actually being said (the chair should have asked people to wait until the mic was passed). It does look like a done deal to me - the guy seemed to get very defensive and IMO angry at times when people criticised the proposal and seemed to want to move on quickly when opposing arguments were raised.
Does anyone know if theyre going to be hosting it somewhere because I had some serious lag and miss a lot of it.

Ignoring any financial gain from registrars, Nominet or speculators, my thoughts after the webcast are more or less unchanged.
.co.uk has been sold for years (long before Nominet) as THE business domain for the UK, adding .uk into the equation just confuses things for consumers and business. Whether or not it is technically required, people will feel that they must have the .uk (just as they currently do about the .com) ending up with a large duplication between .co.uk and .uk. Consumers tend to follow the popular trends so it only takes a bunch of non-technical people to blog / facebook / tweet that .co.uk is being replaced by .uk and a very large proportion of the Internet users will agree.
If we sell / give out all the new .uk's where will Nominet get future growth from? Once all the brands and existing .co.uk's have had their pick, we'll be more or less in the same situation as we are now with choice of name - all the good ones have gone and are with speculators or are in use and it will be down to the same available names regardless of where they lie under the .uk structure, there are simply no more combinations of trade / service / location under .uk than there are under .co.uk. By keeping at 3rd level, we can open up new 3rd levels making more combinations or words available. An example given was the potential .london TLD, surely if Nominet opened ".london.uk" then this would be a viable alternative to .london and would help to bring revenue to Nominet, by simply selling "london.uk" they would get just the single £20 instead of potentially thousands of xxxxx.london.uk customers.
We already have a lot of UK business already taking .com names and simply forwarding the .co.uk to the .com, so what's to suggest that we're suddenly going to get a log of .com's redirecting to .uk and actually promoting the "UK" in the .uk?
If this was to go ahead, why should trademark holders get first dibs as to what they want? Surely any trademark holder who had a case for the "leading UK business domain" would have already put their IP lawyers and / or DRS'd the current .co.uk, anyone who doesn't already have the .co.uk either has weaker rights or has chosen not exercise their rights. Direct.UK is not anything new, it is being presented as an additional part of the whole .UK structure for business, so is a sunrise actually needed?
IF it has to go ahead, I personally like the idea of pushing the current .co.uk's to additionally resolve as .uk for the next few years and then those who want to keep the .uk can choose to renew either at the end of the dual resolution period or renewal period (if the .co.uk is registered for longer than the dual resolution period)

I was shocked by the quality of the web presentation, in my opinion, this was more like a home recording of a school nativity play rather than a presentation of a professional organisation. Operation of the sound system was terrible, it is basic practise to attempt to get more or less the same level for all contributors, if the chair was not giving time for the mic to get to those asking the questions, then I’d have expected the “sound man” to step in and provide his expertise to ensure that all were able to hear. Anyone in the room with a hearing disability would be reliant on the sound system, not just those of us watching via the web.
I'd also have expected the web broadcast team to be monitoring as a guest so they'd see the problems 1st hand rather than relying on the audience.

The main speculators are going to be Nominet.
If they wanted an open and honest consultation why didn't they simply ask the question of an opinion on whether or not .uk should be introduced, then they would have had open minded feedback from everyone. Instead they went forward with ill thought out procedures of how it would work.

Why is Nominet holding a consultation in the first place.. are they obliged to?
I can think of other registries that do nothing of the sort, they make their changes/new implementations etc, and don't consult with anyone.
