.uk question

Im sure this has been asked before so apologies in advance but I have seen a .uk domain available that I would like to buy but Nominet says the current owner of the .co.uk has the right to buy the .uk version.
Does that mean I cant register the .uk and if I did could the owner of the .co.uk version take the .uk version off me?
Confused...hope someone can help

You can't register a .uk domain if it's reserved for the .co.uk owner.

Only the co.uk registrant has the right to register the .uk equivalent until 2019

That is unless they register the .uk then let it drop in that time,

Also if the co.uk drops then the .uk becomes available to register for anyone

Related to this (or should I start a new thread?) - if you buy a .co.uk domain that's for sale by its existing owner and it's transferred to you, do you then inherit the rights to the .UK domain or does the .UK technically open up to everyone?

Yes, the rights go with the co.uk

If someone transfers you the co.uk you then have the right register the .uk in the next 5 ish years if you so wish

The above is assuming that the .uk has not been registered and it's not a co.uk that has dropped since the 10th July (or whenever the cut off date was)

Great! That's good news. I put the fact they get the rights to the .UK of the domain on some auctions... but I had a dreadful thought in the back of my mind that maybe they are lost with a transfer of ownership.

Obviously the .co.uk gets the first bit of the .uk cherry, how many of you are edging your bets and buying up some pre-registered org.uk domains just incase the .co.uk owner doesn't take the .uk domain by 2019 and you get the second chance on it?

It doesn't work that way if they don't take up rights the name is going to become free to reg in 2019
