UK vs US hosting

Just thought I'd jump in here and say thanks to all those who contributed to this thread. It's been very useful indeed.

Having read all your replies I've decided to go with UK hosting (krystal.co.uk). It's only a small website so it's only going to cost an extra £5-£10/year or thereabouts.

In addition to all your replies I carried out a somewhat rudimentary experiment. I did a search for "leather sofas" on Google.co.uk and for the first 10 sites listed, checked where they were hosted.

9 out of 10 of those sites were using UK hosting. 1 was hosted in Germany. That would suggest to me that server location still does influence rankings. To what extent I'm not sure, would be interesting to repeat the experiment.
