Hi,
I am looking at setting up a large fansite and require online forum software. Can anyone, (including admin), tell me what the advantages of vBulletin are over phpBB and why you made the switch to it?

Cheers

Hi Danny,

The user experience is better in VB.

The Admin features in PHPBB are very basic and many more options in VB. VB is more stable and if you know HTML / PHP you can edit the site direct from the Admin panel. In PHPBB you have to edit the PHP files directly.

vB has much cleaner code and is reported to be bug free. If one does arise, it is siad it will be fixed within the day.

I suggest going to vBulletin.com and testing out the demo admin interface to see just how configurable it is.

If you are serious about the forum then the money for VB is a good investment.

Thanks for that usefull info admin, one other question though - Did you need to pay the extra £61 on top of the £82 it already costs, to be able to remove the vbulletin logo from the software so you can add your own logo (eg acorndomains)? This is the 'branding free option' and seems a bit much that they charge extra if this is the case. Also can you use your purchase on more than one site?

Regards

Branding Free Option - $120 per license

All vBulletin communities must retain the vBulletin and Jelsoft copyright text at the end of every page as per the license agreement. If you would like to legally remove this branding, you can purchasing the branding free option, which costs $120 per license.

You can remove the logo, just not the copyright text.

Sorry to bring this thread back to life after 4 years but i've actually just been looking to set-up a PHP forum with my new acquisitions phptalk.co.uk and php-forums.co.uk.

I was looking at vBulletin and wondering whether to lease a license every year for the £55 or pay the £100 for the lifetime (with just one year of updates)

What are your views on this?

Kind Regards
Dave

The branding free allows you to remove ALL copyright and vbulletin/jelsoft references. The logo, you can replace without this.

Pay for the lifetime. You can always sell the licence after the year if you don't want it anymore. They should be transferable.

I have 2 vbulletin, 2 invision powerboard and 1 simple machine forums.

SMF is free and does have spam issues at the moment.
I like VB for the mods.
I like IPB for nice admin control panel. It feels more secure too (not sure if it's true though)

There are probably other options too.
