Wordpress seems to be the answer for every conceivable website, for people that don't want to spend any money......so probably yes, but it won't be a directory website, it will be a blog.

Wordpress doesn't seem to have too many directory options.

WP is not the best choice IMHO. It is possible, but tricky. I have a directory site running iScripts EasyIndex. It's free if you keep a "powered by..." link.

Free directory script - PHP Weby is another free script, quite buggy but easy to work around.
