I have recently bought a .com domain that is the exact name of a UK company currently trading with the .co.uk cc.

This company is regional, sells products (double glazing) in a very competetive domestic market.

Question: In your experience who is the best person to engage within a company with regard to offering them the domain to buy?.

In this case bear in mind it's not a multi-national and they won't have 100s of staff.

Also: If you have experience of selling directly and can offer practical advise / hints / tips then I'd be grateful.

My 'day job' is selling, both face to face & via phone so I've no worries about pitching them just looking for 'words of wisdom'.

P.S. Plse don't go down the copyright /legal ownership route - I'm aware of this.

Cheers,

Just do what I done send them an email from there website and someone will contact you.

Chances are though depending upon if the dot com was registered ages ago and they couldnt get it.

They might not be bothered by the dot com version, in some respects the dot com is only really worth something if you want to go global.

I used to purchase the dot coms as well, infact I have two domain names now that I have the co.uk for but not the dot com but I dont want to say what the domains are simply because I might be tempted to purchase the dot coms.

I have dropped a lot of dot coms as most are not worth the reg fee depending upon your server location.

Well the update is that I called and spoke to the 'gatekeeper'

He who was not interested in buying the domain, he who didn't even ask how much it was... I thought it was getting warm when he asked about the benefits of having the .com version.

But alas NO!

Oh well it's parked, it has some good industry keywords in the name so who know I may just get some traffic......

There are a whole load of brainless idiots out there.

I once worked on a £30 million UK website launch for a top 2 consultancy and in two meetings about it I couldn't get them to buy the free to reg .co.uk domain. Each meeting with top partners on £xxx per hour.

They only understand profits and sales, and brand values only if they can see a way of ripping you off for misusing it.

The salesy sales approach is to offer them x number of highly targeted sales leads i.e. your traffic, and don't mention "domain name", but call it an internet site. Mention the competitors paying money to advertise on it. Mention vaguely better chances of top positions in search engines which brings them more leads. Did I say leads?

Also mention that periodically the domain name attracts misdirected email business enquiries that are intended for the .co.uk and that you hope that this won't sometime become a misdirected email for an important deal and that the future owner of the domain won't misuse that information.

Tell them also that because its a dot com they will have just about zero chance of getting it back off the new owner who could put anything they like up on it including bad press for the company.

e.g. I can't find it but there was an excellent example of a site up that completely demolished a solicitor in essex. The company eventually got the domain name back but not without a great deal of bad publicity.

All for the sake of a couple of grand now!

Make sure your emails are visibly copied in to 3 or 4 big names in the company, so at the very least they have to talk about it together.

And do it again in 3 or 4 months time when they've hopefully realised what idiots they've been.

If all else fails, sometimes the top salesperson in the company might buy it for a low amount to increase his/her lead flow.

I've an idea that you could try advertising on google ppc (spending your own money) and get 3 or 4 leads. Then call them up and offer them the leads and ask for commission. When they ask where you get the leads, tell them it was from using the domain name properly - and you can show them how to do it at consultancy hourly rates plus the domain name/site thrown in for a bargain extra.

Its all a bit much for selling a domain name I know but I thought I'd post my thoughts anyhow!!

What good advise. Totally along the lines of how I wanted to pitch it but as always you have to speak with the right person (not the numbskull who I spoke with).

I will leave the site parked for a couple of weeks and then go back and speak with the 'right person'. Hopefully there'll be some traffic stats that I can present and liken them to sales leads. And mention the above. If that doesn't get their heads-up then god help their bottom line...

Thanks yesterday.

Going to have to disagree being honest

1) You send them sales via google to which your paying for

2) They dont care where the sales come from so you dont know how many sales your sending a day

They could end up with 50 sales earning them £10,000 and you might have spent £50 - £100 on google click thrus.

Your trying to piss in a big pool and you've just earnt them £10 grand you've spent your money.

You can try this approach but dont come crying to me if it doesnt work.

I was only talking about 2 or 3 leads to give them the idea and I'd spend £6 for a potential £2k plus consultancy sale any day of the week.

I won't be crying on your shoulder Mark. Thanks for the offer.

Mark,

Always your right to disagree however hold off on the post button b4 replying, I think you missed the bit about commission....?

I saw the bit about comission fish but.......

Did you see that he said to send sales to them and they are wondering where they are coming from.

You keep stats to which you cant prove that you made any sales.

So you've wasted your time anyway

The only way is if they have an affiliate scheme so they would see where the sales are coming from.

You paying google click thrus and sending them traffic and getting them sales is a no no.

You dont need to do that.

If you want them to buy the domain name, simply set up a website, try and get as many hits as you can, have a clock counter if need be.

Send traffic to your dot com, if they see dot com for windows etc in the top 10 and there top 20 they will want to buy.

You sending them freebies there just say thanks

And just looking at your post again as you have already pointed out, but hey I might be a fuck wit after all.

They are regional not NATIONWIDE so why the fuck will they worry about a global dot com.

Staybrite (spits) windows are a national company, they advertise on TV, they employee 16 year old kids to knock on doors, they phone people up left right and center.

You say that your in sales, but you havent got a basic idea about sales if you have to ask who and how to sell the dot com version of their domain.

Also the fact that if they are only regional, they probaly dont need the dot com version which I have said before.

Not all dot coms are worth the money especially as most of the UK search engines display dot.co.uk anyway unless the dot com is on a uk based server.

I rest my case

I won't be crying on your shoulder Mark. Thanks for the offer.

Please don't continue on this thread for the sake of my fingers.

Nice speaking with ya, bye.

Dumb fucker

If you check whos post it is, its fish who started the post

Go back to bed your tiresome

You lot need to chill out, spread a little lurve.

In the summer sun you'll see me emerge
As the train comes in, I'll step on to the verge
The platform awash with Romanians aplenty
Then Lee, English, standing out amongst the many

Our eyes will meet like souls lost in a sea
We'll find ourselves the happiest we can be
The smiles give away how we really feel
For as long as this has taken, more time we steal

We stand there watching as if transfixed
Wondering what the other is thinking as minds tick
It took so long but we're finally there
As I move forward and brush my hand through your hair

We didn't know how we'd greet
But we figured it out, very nice very sleak
A great little smile, teeth on show
A quick hug and a kiss, both faces glow

Sensing something is happening for real for the very first time
Just like these past few months when being online
Knowing that passion was to arrive on our shores
As Isa and Lee knocked on each other's doors

In the summer sun I'll see Isa emerge
As the train comes in, we'll be on the verge
There's no one on the platform, it's just you and me
A new horizon with Isa and Lee

Now buy my domains and stop your arguing, can't you see this is love haha obviously a few words changed.

clothes off at once no time to get home
the romanians aghast at the action on show
Revelation, surprise, she's actually a man
Is it still love or is the talk just a sham?

(hey just kidding!)

You say that your in sales, but you havent got a basic idea about sales if you have to ask who and how to sell the dot com version of their domain.

You are sooo complimentary (not). It's always a good idea of knowing who you are selling to and more to the point if it's the right person

Company decision makers of who will buy a domain.
CEO - unlikely
CFO - Definately not
CSO - Ditto
MD - Unlikely
Tea Lady - Try it Mark, being you're so smart.

Do you get my point? I wanted someone with experience of selling person to person and who (i.e. what is their job function ) that person was.

And please no expletives, it shows ignorance and a lack of respect, especially to someone you've not met.

What the fook are you on about? If you have so much knowledge why the hell are you asking who you should contact?

I've already told you ya prick, if its a regional company then they probaly dont want the dot com version as it doesnt matter to them.

If they was nationwide or indeed Worldwide then it would be worth it.

I can turn down 2 grand for one of my co.uk's your begging for a dot com, so think about it.

Always aim before you fire, it helps to hit the target. You are soo off the mark it's legendary.

As for 'you telling me' funny enough I did notice, it's difficult to ignore arrogance in someone.

Go play in the mud.
