Why are Newcastle doing so well?

I'd like to see where they are in January, until then it's just a good run. If they are in a similar league position in January then it's time to start analysing. ALSO...they've got man city, man united and chelsea back to back. I expect them to get something off of chelsea, but doubt very much they will get anything from the other two games.

Not sure mate, they always seem to raise their game against United, but depends where the match is; Old Trafford or St James Parks. I think they'll get a point against City but nothing from Chelsea.

If they keep doing so well though their chairman might sack the gaffa.

Great pic for an avatar! The point you make about getting rid of the "outspoken ones" seems to me to have helped so much

well, I hardly follow football these days, but it does seem that whatever team that nasty little toerag Joey Barton LEAVES, they start doing extremely well :D

team spirit grows once he leaves. wonder why

Sounds about right! Just realised you're in Barnsley, do you follow them at all?

Nope mate, not the biggest football fan to be honest. I like to see Newcastle do well as you genuinely never know what is going to happen in one of their matches, beat anyone or lose to anyone.

Barnsley charge about £25 to watch a game which is shocking, so haven't watched them in over 10 years. I'd give about £5 a match to watch them and I'd like some change. :D

They haven't really played anyone of note yet, The win against Stoke at the Britannia i thought was a good win, but has been put into context by Stokes poor form of late.
I expect them to finish mid table, they have a small squad and come Christmas time that will hurt them, i am pleased for Alan Pardew though,he has come through selling their alleged best players and made an excellent start to the season, i know the Geordies don't like him but in terms of running the club sensibly i think Mike Ashley has done a great job.

Newcastle

Being a Gerodie

Ashley is in a nightmare situation, he actually has made the club into a business that makes cash, after he lost about £100 million. But he can't compete with the others, he must be hoping he can sell it to a rich oil country

Hopefully UEFAs fair play rules will ensure that all clubs live within their means, we will have to see if they enforce it though or loopholes are found from clubs like Man City who have effectively sponsored themselves with the renaming of their stadium, therefore adding more money to their income allowing them to keep spending like crazy.
Mike Ashley has really turned it around up there like you say, they are now making money and living within their means, i would like to see more owners follow suit but unfortunately they keep chasing the dream.

Of course though there are too many fans who should beware what they wish for when they see big players arriving at their clubs.

Abramovich hasn't brought any money to Chelsea, The Arabs have brought any money to Man City. They as lenders or guarantors have loaned the clubs money, in no way have they given them anything.

Of course as well all know, Gravy trains always pull into the sidings eventually and when they leave they won't write that debt off. Man City and Chelsea will be almost certainly insolvent at some point in the future. It is a ticking time bomb, the happiest fans in this world should be Arsenal fans, what Wenger has done is a miracle and is right not to get involved in this mutually assured destruction of a financial arms race.

In 10 years the Arsenal fans that currently want him out will look back and kiss his a@ss, whilst they are sat in the stands of a stadium paid for without debt by the dealings of Wenger.

That being said, Wenger has the club at his heart, I won't say the same for Ashley.

Good to see yet another West Ham reject (Alan Pardew) doing so well while the Hammers languish in the Championship - mind you it's nice to be winning a few games this season after last year's desperate campaign.

Exactly. They've played against Spurs and Arsenal, but that was before both those teams started to play well. Having said that it's important to take points off teams in the bottom half of the table.

There's always one team to exceeds expectation at the start of the season like Hull, Blackpool, etc. They'll have done well to still be up there come January.

Well said Mr Wingate ,i feel for Manchester United ,great club ,great tradition but when they fail to qualify for the Champions league they will dissapear ,remember years ago when football clubs used to run up massive debts and go insolvent and then trade under a different holding company ,well the rules have changed and if they go belly up now it's a totally different story.....long ,long road back

Agree that Wenger has done an amazing job. If you base how good a manager is on the position his team finishes and the money the club has spent then Wenger would win nearly every year.

I just wish Ashley would get out of Newcastle. It's hard to like a side run by such an obnoxious turd and the Magpies are a loveable bunch really given their fans are so nuts and the whole club is up one minute, down the next.

I know it's not cheap, I gave up my season ticket after 14 years this year so I can spend the time with my daughter, planned to make the odd trip but I wont be bothering after seeing the prices on the turnstiles. My dad and bro still have season tickets, just have to wait until one of them can't make it.

They're not that bad to watch at the minute! :)

I knew he would do it, just as things are going well for them. Ashley renames St James's Park the "Sports Direct Arena"

Is he just taking the piss now or what, what's next a picture of Mohammed in the centre circle? Some how I don't think I'll be calling it by that name.

As a geordie I reckon there's unlikely to be a single Newcastle fan who isn't pissed at this.

I reckon that's the point of him doing it though. He's now taken the pain out of the stadium renaming for the next company who actually pays money for it. From what I heard, the rename to the Sports Direct Arena is just until the naming rights are sold on.

This is his second attempt after he cocked it up the first time around by calling it the Sports Direct @ St James Park. It was then too easy for the media to keep calling it St James Park, whereas if you drop the St James Park completely, then they have no choice. (see Etihad Arena / Eastlands / City of Manchester Stadium)

I don't understand why people get so annoyed at renaming of stadiums, you want your team compete at the highest level, buy the best players and pay them big money, yet don't like it when the club do something like this to bring in some extra income to enable this.

I couldn't care less what a stadium is called, ultimately the fans will always call it what they want, when they play in Europe you are not allowed to have sponsored stadiums hence all Man City european games are officialy still played at wastelands on match days anyway.

I know it's about history, but times change for better or worse, and if you don't move with them you get left behind.
Like it or not football at that level is a corporate monster, wages have spirralled out of control as much as the egos of most players, i am not saying it's right but fans want success yesterday and are the first to moan when clubs don't buy good players or start losing games, yet when owners try to to do something to help then they are crucified for it,most clubs can not extend or build another stadium to help create more revenue, so renaming of stadiums is probably the best way to do it.

I am not sure if Ashley has actually injected money through the naming of the stadium, but for clubs with legit sponsorship deals like Arsenal,Stoke,Swansea,Coventry,Bolton,Hull etc no one bats an eye lid, in Germany a lot clubs have sponsored stadiums,Imtech stadium,Allianz Arena etc, i know a lot of people will disagree but it all seems rather hypocritcal to slate this kind of deal then demand success and berate the club when it doesn't happen as they can't compete with the big clubs.

Edit, just seen that he is only using SportsDirect.com as a showcase to potential buyers, and if anyone comes in the sportsdirect.com will disappear and be replaced, so not at all like Man City sponsoring themsleves deal.
