What's going on? A couple of my sites have droped 3-4 places. One is an excellent refrerence site with hundreds of pages, it was no2 on page one of G. I think Wiki was at no5. Now Wiki is at 1 and my site is down to no5 on page 1.

I did several searches for various words and Wiki is at the top of page 1. Is this due to a Google update? Is it permanent?

There could be a multitude of reasons? content, updates, authority, links, relevance etc etc. Pages move up and down all the time if its “g” update and you’ve lost just a few position then your quite lucky… Try different browsers etc you’ll likely get different results, 100s of pages means fiddly to “g”... Certainly don’t rely on “G” and just being on the top page. diversify ways people find, visit your site, Gs ultimate goal would be any search makes them revenue,,,

Basically my main site was started as a reference site about a lifelong hobby. I've built it for people to use not to make money. It's been up for several years and I did add G and eBay ads to it over a year ago. This is mainly to cover the cost of keeping it up . *I made the novice error of using * Yahoo site builder, which although it is an easy and convenient option, it does keep you subscribed, as you need to use their software and to keep the forum up. Pay for updates etc.. I wouldn't consider advertising my site or spending money or branding etc. as I don't see at as a business. I'm just offering information and sharing knowledge.

My site is at no 1 on Yahoo, Bing and was at 1-2 on G for years even through all the updates. Now it has dropped Wiki is top but it is even below a school website which only contains a couple of pages of basic information.

Now back to Wiki. I think it's a great site with a lot to offer and full of great information. Yet it's not as good as a lot of other reference sites out there for specific searches but currently rates at the top of most pages.

I know it's impossible for G to monitor every site to rank them but hopefully things will settle back.

Has anyone else took a hit and what are your thoughts on Wiki being at the top of so many searches?

Normally Wiki is at the top because of a highly relevant article, good authority outbound links, no spelling mistakes/grammar, and more information about the topic at hand.

Wiki also has tens of thousands of high quality inbound links, so to be fair 9 times out of 10 it actually is the most relevant page.

The last review started 28th Sept and lasted all weekend. It was supposed to be aimed at reducing the exact match advantage which a lot of domains enjoy, and had some elements of Panda thrown into the mix to bite more bits off unsuspecting sites.

If you're talking about an EMD, no wonder it has dropped a bit.
