Just got a new wood burning stove which is great... however the rope around the door decided to self combust which filled the room with horrid smoke. Not sure whether this is "normal" or a bedding in thing.

Any ideas? When i say combust it sort of simmered... a bit :(

Steady...my appartment block caught fire last Tuesday (the adjacent flat), it's a scary experience to open your front door and only see smoke, so watch yourself.

If anyone hasn't got a working smoke alarm, go and sort it tomorrow!

The Firebrigade will come round and fit them for free if you ask nicely :)

Oh it works, believe me! Not a nice experience Admin.

Did you get it from the Ilkley Stove Center ratboy? Went in there about a month ago and wasn't very impressed with the properietor's poncy atitiude.

To answer your question though, I'd say it was not normal as it's clearly dangerous to have something burning outside of the special chamber designed to burn stuff in.

Hi bb,

No wasn't from there, bought it from a big stove trader on eBay (professionally fitted mind you). Going to ring them Monday and ask before I try and test the responsiveness of Ilkley's finest!

Was yer fitter HETAS registered?

Let us know the outcome... it maybe that the rope was meant to be removed after installation. Dunno as I'm not into stoves and stuff - not posh enough. :-D

Down here in the developed south we have something called 'central heating' - its great!

Now, im off to the toilet. INSIDE the house!

I was tempted to install one this christmas with a back boiler for the central heating...

I believe its entirely normal (but how bad was the smoke?), but check with the manufacturers on Monday! Its a bit like fitting a new exhaust on a car, it always smells abit whilst the new paint burns off...

The rope for those of you that don't know is the seal around the door, much like the rubber seal you have on a cooker.

Being totally impatient I light the old girl again today, no problemo. My mate says that it's normal. Looking back I might have got a bit carried away and gone nuclear on the temperature, hence the fire. Think it might be OK now.

;)
