Morning All

After all of the good advice I have recieved so far I decided to take the plunge and sort myself out with wordpress, that's were the fun began. I read through the setting up pages; don't understand a word of it! Not to be deterred I carried on reading and have figured out the following:

Need a host but which one, I use Godaddy and 123reg to buy names and I know they do hosting, evo seems to come highly recommended also?

How much hosting do I need?

Will my host help me set up wordpress?

Then I have to download wordpress and do some file stuff? Seriously losing the will to live at this point

Assuming I figure out which host and how to download wordpress, is it then on my computer to build mini sites then when they are done I upload them to my host or is the program hosted on my host so I build sites on there like Blogger?

As you can see I haven't got a clue what I am talking about and advice would be appreciated; preferably in plain English. I still have a couple of fellow Acorners to contact who offered help but I am one of those people who believe in trying to help myself first so please don't think I am ignoring your kind offers.

Thank you

Aiden

Wow, ok. Don't think of it in terms of being complicated - it's not.

The easiest thing to do is find a web host that offers a one-click install of WordPress.

Then make sure you choose a hosting package with them which allows you to do a one-click install (i.e. probably not the most basic one). Your web host is highly unlikely to offer WordPress support; however the wordpress.org forums are really helpful.

I think once you've installed WP you'll see it's actually really simple and intuitive; if you have no problem using this forum then you'll have no problem using WordPress.

I'm not going to recommend a web host to you because I work for one so I'm biased, but I'm sure there will be plenty of recommendations.

I always use Fantastico, part of my WHM and cPanel to install Wordpress, very easy and simple process. :) Like Blossom says, it's just a click or two and you're done.

Good luck with it.

Thanks Both,

I am probably making this into a big deal; it's what makes me tick:D

I suppose the only thing I can do is do it!

Thanks

Aiden

It's quite simple, and wordpress is so good once you get use to all the features and benefits, used to make sites without using a propper cms, and it took ages, especially to update etc. But wordpress is good because it's easy to add content make changes, and make a fairly decent looking site :)

For my domains, I use 123reg for .co.uk, but for my hosting I use http://www.galaxywebsolutions.com/ which has been pretty good for past few years.

I think I finally have made a decision:

123 offer unlimited for a small amount, I can press a button and it sets wordpress up for me and I can have as many sites as I want on there. I understand this way I do not need to download worpress on to my computer and do the setting up stuff.

Phew I am glad thats figured out

Thanks

Aiden

What package are you going to go for their. If you plan on creating many minisites using wordpress or another cms then the number of databases on the two cheaper options may cause you headaches

Hey Thanks

I was looking at the top one apparently I can have many domains on there and I get 3 domain names as part of the deal so seems like a good deal?

Any other suggestions are appreciated, I have made hard work of making this decision but haven't done it yet so still open to persuasion:confused:

Thanks

Hostgator are my choice of host and I use Fantasico to install. Once you have put a few sites up it does become second nature. I have my own checklist I use for set up as it makes it easy to remember.

Thanks

I have been away for the week and now need to get going with my wordpress education, can't wait but a little nervous.

Thanks

Aiden

I use a company called Micfo in the states and I think they do UK servers if you ask for them. I find them to be really cheap for what they offer (about £4.50 p/m for pretty much unlimited hosting) and they have fantastic customer support with plenty of 1 lick install apps, been with them since 2004.

I like many people on here have had major issues with 123-reg, I take all my clients away from them now as part of the course.

Hosting wise I use evohosting.co.uk as do many on here, alot probably because I rave about them :p

They offer Softaculous, Installatron and Fantastico Delux so lots of options to install scripts easy :)

Who said it was easy:confused:

God knows how I muddled my way through setting up hosting and wordpress, at least I wrote the multitude of usernames and passwords down.

Can someone confirm for me that I have done it right?

I bought hosting and it set up database for me during registration

I used installatron to install wordpress on my hosts server

Q. I assume now I need to learn how to use wordpress and then I can build minisites directly from my cpanel but do I still need wordpress on my computer?

Sorry for the basic question.

Aiden

Depends on what you plan on doing. If your just installing a bog standard template and then adding a few pages of content then no you will not need a local instalation.

Thanks

So let me get this right in my head

I can build simple little sites using the cpanel/installation but if I was working on my masterpiece I am best to have worpress on my home computer so I can be working on it off line and then upload it all to my host, is that correct?

Sorry to be a nuisance

Thanks

Aiden

With wordpress there is very little reason to have a local install.

People with a local install are usually coding into wordpress and don't want their changes to affect the online version.

In a nutshell yes when I'm customizing a theme I like to work locally just for convenience.
But theres absolutely no reason to do this and I certainly wouldn't recommend it for a newbie have a play for now learn how things work get some content into first site.
Then tryout a few free themes I'm sure there will be one to meet your needs theres thousands to choose from.

Thank you both :)

You have put my mind at rest that's for sure.

So it's a crash course in Wordpress for me and hopefully my first effort won't be too far away from publication.

Thank you so much at least I will be able to sleep tonight ;)
