It didn't attract any further bids when it was pushed to auction.

I don't personally think it's a bargain and would have been happy to sell it at that price 8)

It's amazing for an end user 3600 exacts £3125 = less than £1 per exact search, for ever.

You make it sound so easy yet you need to consider a few things >

1st you need to get ranked at number 1 then consider the fact that a generic at number 1 only gets 30% to 40% of traffic so assuming 40% that = approx 1500 UVs and then you have the bounce rate to consider and then the conversion rate and it doesn't leave you with a lot for your money :( so like I said I think it's about right for the price.

It's not a bad domain, but I wouldn't say it's a bargain either. It would appear most hostels don't even use the word 'youth' infront of them anymore, opting to use just 'hostel' or 'backpackers' accomodation instead (obviously with the exception of the YHA).

As doodlebug says, time and therefore money will still be needed to get it to rank at #1. It's shouldn't be impossible to get a cheaper or reg fee domain to rank at number one for far less than £3100, so the valuation of less than £1 per exact is a bit irrelevant really.

yes I agree for an internet marketer your figures have merit but would stress the value to an end user is different, even viewing the listing without clicking is a benefit. This is a generic brand domain, not a fad, not a come and go thing, you have to consider the long term marketing of an entity and the cost of a domain in the whole scheme of things.

for an end user how is it irrelevant, you have to pay 36p per click for eternity ?

Yes, if comparing to Adwords.

However, YouthHostels.co.uk isn't the only domain in the world which you could get to number one for the term 'youth hostels' in organic search.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the term 'youth' doesn't appear to be used as much and I think you could optimse a cheaper and more appropriate domain up to the number one spot for less than £3100. :)

Such as ?

yet backpackers only gets 1600 exacts:eek:

people from abroad looking to come to the UK would (I believe) use 'backpackers' rather than 'youth hostels' in their search.

Since we in the UK don't tend to go 'backpacking' (not in that sense) then I wouldn't expect to see high searches for the term.

Anything which doesn't contain "youth" as I think it's too limiting. It will no doubt only be a matter of time before someone who older thinks it's a clever idea to sue a youth hostel for age discrimination based solely on the word.

Exacts aren't everything, and you could get up to the #1 spot for "youth hostels" on a different domain which doesn't include youth in it. Look who is occupying the top two spots for the keyword hostels on Google; it's not Hostels.com.

What do you value the domain at out of interest?

I agree, take a look at the first page of google for the search "youth hostels" doesn't even contain a domain with the word youth in :). Infact, the first one is the hyphenated version of this name on page three!

I'd have thought about 7.5k for an end user using it to promote the trade, I do, like you, think that with the ppc it's not as attractive for an internet marketer.
But these flagship domains are not getting there deserved valuations.
