You cant miss youtube.com in the news at the moment, millions of viewers each day but also costing (losing) millions in bandwidth costs.

Anyone know what the legality issues are here?

If you record a video and lay over a music track, isn't that public broadcasting violating the musicians rights?

What if you do a karaoke style video - is it legal to publish? -
anyone up for an AD video karaoke competition?

The background music on most video's on youtube or google video must break the artists copyright. I'm suprised a number of the big labels haven't put thier foot down and asked for the video's to be taken down. I'm guilty of hosting a couple of video's on google with someback ground music.

However..... Artists and labels are using services such as youtube to host thier music, http://www.arcticmonkeys.com/ being one of them.

I see Sony Pictures just bought www.grouper.com

Maybe someone like Google, Microsoft or MySpace will buy Youtube and the bandwidth problem will be solved.

Or maybe Youtube will have to be policed like Napster.
