yes very sad, but what a shite name, Zavvi.

Takes me back years ago to the infamous boo.com, the sports retail site which spent millions of investment money on advertising just to tell people who they were etc

I know they've gone bust cos of Woolworths but surely they could of thought of something better and bought an appropriate generic to sell dvd's from!

so who else do you think is on the critical list?,must be poundstretcher and the pound shops with the pound so weak against other currencies? anymore

mark

I think poundstretcher and any poundshop should be fine. They will pay more for the goods but their customer base should increase significantly over the coming months.

Any shop that sells luxury goods will struggle. Anything from handbags to sofas.

I would put flooring and carpet stores high up on the list.

.

zavvi was knackered because of woolworths. Woolworths supplied zavvi.

poundshops will thrive, we'll all be shopping in them soon.

my moneys on sedo next.

scooter beat me to it.

Car companies will suffer imho, people who would normally trade in will think twice.

Doubtful. They're going to be the outlets that benefit from everyone else's misfortune, as they'll have bankrupt and desperate retailers lining up to dump unsold stock through them at throwaway prices, just to raise a few quid and/or clear the shelves for next year...

Yes Zavvi is a crap name.

Poundshops will be laughing !!!

Funny Stender "" Sedo will be next "" lol

Anybody want to buy shares in sedo parking LTD ? ( joke )

What about SCS and DFS, people usually buy a new 3 pc suite at this time of the year, can't see it now though ? got mine in August off Ebay

NB* This is all positive, the retailers close down and the e-tailers grow stronger = more business for us publishers or affiliate marketers, whatever you want to call them ?

Zavvi must have incompetent management to say the least. They could have seen this coming ten years ago.

I don't think its sad at all... This is just another phase of the economic cycle... We've seen it before, we will see it again...

It just means there will be more oppurtunity for investment in market areas that were once monopolised by corporate giants... New brands will emerge, diversify, expand and then?... collapse, back to square one and round we go again...

Rich

I was actually in Zavvi this afternoon and the one in our local shopping centre use to be the Virgin Megastore so I just assumed that they were connected and rebranded, clearly not coz I cant see Richard B going bust any time soon!

Richard Branson sold off the Virgin stores and the UK shops were part of a management buy out and rebranded

Exactly, bring it on. Only thing is that it is impossible for new banks to come through now because the Government rescued them.

So on this occasion on the financial roundabout, the incompetent people aboard the financial roundabout, don't have to get off.

So unfortunately they'll be back round again.

What would have happened is that 30 or 40 new banks would have sprung up and started to lend again, now we have zombie banks where gov says they have to recapitalise whilst lending more! Game on for the stupidty of Gordon Brown

thank god for that - what a horrid little brand..

and what a shite name

apart from the backlinks and existing brand, would anybody even try to catch it?

Nope

Zavvi, sounds like a name for an acne cream, wonder if Pfizer will put in a bid for the domain name :D

I had never heard of Zavvi until reading this topic.

Greywing as it right with the roundabout theory, seems the finance sector are on a magic roundabout.

WH Smiths, not sure of them going under but even if they close their shops, when you go into Tescos, Sainsburys etc, all newspapers and magizines are supllied through WH Smiths so they will always have a business.

Systreg, yes come to think of it, it does sound like a zit cream, anybody want to reg it when it drops and develop an acne cream ?

I always wonder why people still shop in WH Smiths - crap selection of books, dvds, games and much more expensive than elsewhere.

What about Halfords?

Also, Clintons - always seems really overpriced.

I can't see WHSmiths failing. With the collapse of so many entertainment chains in recent months (Woolies, Zavvi, Music Zone, etc), then someone at some point must benefit from it all .... in the short-term. Go along the high street and see where you can actually buy a CD or DVD. Yes this market is shrinking in favour of on-line puchases and electronic formats, hence the comment about it being short-term benefit.

I have to go along with the thoughts of the car industry. The larger dealerships will remain, but the independents will go to the wall. There's an independent car dealer round the corner from me that has just got a RR Phantom Drophead and you have to wonder how he expects to move that on, especially when it's lined up next to cars that average out at about 5% of the Drophead's value.

Although the value of used cars, has reduced, so has the value of the trade-ins. So the cost to change cars hasn't reduced much, making it just as expensive to buy a car. I don't imagine that car finance has mirrored the reduction in interest rates?

Merry Christmas all!!

Online sites like play.com will be reaping the benifits
