“Local SEO” service for my web business

I have my own website but have never been able to place top 10 in the search engines. I have read about SEO and even tried to optimize to achieve better positioning without any results.
Can anyone point me to the right direction? I really don't know what I am doing wrong. I am not a professional developer, I am self taught, but have been writing html for years.

Any help will be greatly appreciated..

The difficulty depends on what you are trying to rank top 10 for, what's the website address & main keyword you are after?

Focus on writing good content for your site, put a good amount of text on each page, use keyword suggestion tools to make sure you have the right keyphrases sprinkled in the text, make your site something that people want to link to, then read Google engineer Matt Cutts blog to make sure your site code and structure isn't doing anything that is interfering with search engine performance.

There’re so many factors: on page: keyword in title, link text, in bold, link text from back links, size of your site, frequency of updating your site..
Or Have a look at Local SEO in my sign that for some more tips. The main thing is that seems to work is getting you to top from other sites to help you rank well.

You can do some LOCAL seo using follwoing:

For suppose your business is realted/ catered to people living around new jersy, Search for "New jersy", "new Jersy forums" and simialr keywords in google.
Then go to those forums, blogs and post some useful posts there and also about your blog are website in signature.

The better the site, the easier they are to obtain. If it's truly unique/better than anything else out there then it's not that hard...
