100 companies that REALLY get the concept of generic domains...

I put together a list of 100 companies that are making great use of the exact-match generic .co.uk domain name for their product, service or industry.

In some respects, it's a pretty random selection, but I tried to get a broad cross-section of B2C and B2B niches in the list. Took a while to put together, as I probably checked 30+ domains that led to landing pages for every 1 that led to a useful, live site.

Agreed thanks Edwin. Not an excellent one but i sold "MagneticBracelets_co_uk" the other day to a company specialising in that niche.

The contact i had at the company suprised me as she understood SEO and the relevance of a "generic" domain.

5 to 10 years from now when it's common practice for businesses to buy generic names they will all go up in price a lot, so try to keep a lot back, i am in 3 certain catergories and selling the ones in other catergories.

I think they will be a good investment/speculation

I tried to stick to examples where the original company name/brand remained to some extent. There are hundreds of examples where a generic itself has been made into the brand i.e. a new company or major site has been started around a generic.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that - it's a really great way to use a good domain - but I thought the audience for the article (apart from domainers like us) is much more likely to be people from companies that already have a web presence. The article is meant to make them think, give them some ideas as to how they could integrate the use of a generic into their marketing without having to give up what they've already achieved on the web.

So in every instance on my list, the brand/company is something other than just "Keyword.co.uk".

I know that's a bit arbitrary, but it was the little mental "rule" I used to work out what to add in this particular instance.
