Hi All

Some of my domains at 123-reg.co.uk that use their forwarding service are currently unavailable (Sun 27th May 6.30pm). I've e-mailed them, no response so far, is anyone else seeing this?

I guess their DNS servers have gone down.

Rgds

Yes it's been up and down the past few days, it does me head in. I can't move one of the domains either as google gets the hump and moves me down if I change nameservers.

Yep

Me too - I have had a couple that were using URL forwarding where all I get is the 123-reg holding page, and others where the 'www.' versions resolves but the non 'www.' version doesn't - not good.

Have moved a couple to a different TAG, and will be checking the rest one by one - I did have better things to do on a bank holiday !

Oh - anyone know how to move .com away from 123-reg - I have couple of there and see no reason to renew them using their services. Loads of stuff on their web site on how to transfer in ...

Thanks

12 hours later I realised it's 123-reg.co.uk

Hi All

Yes, it brought me and my 20 + sites down!!!!

I've tried changing to non -framed it works for 10 mins then fails again...all on a bank holiday weekend ..compensation is in order here!!

I spent 12 hors yesterday thinking I'd broken frames on my sites

I only relised it was the registrar because the 3 domains I host that are not reg'd with them work!!

ub40.eu notout.in (eurodns) and doctorwhogames.co.uk (streamline)

Eggs and baskets me thinks!!

Dear All

Buried in their support site is the following service status message:

123-reg services/packages not working correctlyMessage created:28/05/2007, 12:08
Last update:28/05/2007, 12:10
123 reg are currently experiencing problems with the following packages/services.
Instantsite is currently not letting customers edit or start a new instantsite, sites that are currently published are not effected.
E-mail forwarding this service is currently not working.
Web forwarding this service is currently not working.

We are looking into these issues as a matter of urgency and hope to have services returned to normal as soon as possible.

I have noticed like Lee that their URL forwarding has been playing up for over a week now, although a lot worse today.

As regards transferring my .com - sent them a message asking for an authorisation code, as that seams to be what my new registrar needs - if I am doing the wrong thing then someone please let me know.

Cheers

Its interesting to see that so many are using forwarding.

Forwarded domains as we know do not get indexed by Google and if they are simply parked its better to change the nameservers to the parking company because, if they go down, the parking company will offer compensation.

Of course, if you are simply using forwarding to boost traffic to an established site, and do not have a reseller account to redirect from, you have no choice.

I can assure you they do get indexed

Well, its true they do, I have forward domains indexed however I was under the impression that they didnt, as previously none of my forward domains did and put it down to a quirk for the 2 that are in at the moment.

update - Im leaving that message as is - it makes no sense and serves as a warning to others about the perils of Kronenburg. :)

Im not so sure. Are you talking about forwarding to a hosted site index page, or a subfolder of an existing domain/site?

I've also been experiencing problems with the forwarding over the past few days - bit of a pain

Hi

My experience is that some parked sites that get quite a good bit of type-in traffic tend to get indexed no idea why, I suspect it is cos loads of people have Google & Yahoo toolbars that pick up where people have been and add them to the index automatically.

URL forwarded parked sites with a Frame Title and some Meta tags do sometimes seam to get indexed where previously if you submitted them as a raw parked page to search engines it would never get added.

Currently have a couple with 1&1, others with 123 Reg and some with UKReg all offer the ability to use 'Frame Titles' and meta tags.

What I have not been able to work out is how much if any extra traffic or Click Thrus you get, just from having the sites indexed. Subjectively from having put some of my 'dog domains' with Park4money (which uses syndicated articles and Google Adsense) a site that was not getting any traffic will get something if added to the index if only a few views week and the odd click, hence a worthy Goal. However if the 'carry on' with 123-Reg over the last week or so is more than a one-off then clearly not worthwhile.

Thoughts and comments from those more experienced much appreciated.

Best Regards

JohnP.

123reg

I now have over 660 domains shut out of sedo by 123 , time to shift when back on line , enough is enough , fed up with bad service , anyone know of any good uk established isp willing to give good rate and help to transfer so many....zee

heartinternet.co.uk are good and cheap.

ukreg.com are also good but not quite as cheap (almost) but they have a better control panel.

If 123-reg are a pain to move, It might be better going through Nominet and paying £22 + VAT to get them moved in one foul swoop.
http://www.nominet.org.uk/registrants/maintain/transfer/mass/

If you do this and point them to heartinternet.co.uk you have to import them 10 at a time.

If you point them to ukreg.com you can paste the lot in one go.

I tend to agree with firestars. If I park a domain, I park it directly with the parking company using their nameservers (ie:namedrive) or I use mod_rewrite (sometimes using an "error 301 redirect") to a hosted site. Unfortuneatly the ability to use "search engine friendly" mod rewrite usually requires a hosting account.

Using forwarding is an extra link in a chain which can break, and the registrar is under no obligation to fix it quickly as its usually a free service. Also Google indexing with forwarding (whether frame forwarding or http refresh) isn't reliable. Trust me as I get quite a few complaints about it.

Also Lee I'm not too sure why you loose your rankings in Google if you swap nameservers. Thats an interesting one.

Well it happened, maybe it's because I had it hosted on a blank page for a week while I transferred the .com over (password was on the .co.uk and email forwarding cancels the password link for security so has to be direct.)

All the results got moved about whereas it was a given for several years that I was number two. I did try moving nameserves again but the same thing happened, competitors now try linking from my site by posting on the mb but I have to delete them as that gives them authority and again shifts the results.

I'm placed second, fourth and tenth but I usually have four in the top ten.

yup bit of a worry when you build up decent rankings for a competitive term, then make changes and risk loosing them.

It amazes me how domains you do absolutely nothing with can take on a life of their own. For instance I had around a 100 domains all pointing at a particular
hosted site (not particularly great domains, just typo's etc..)

When I checked the webstats noticed these domains were getting listed by google as well as the main site (I'd been using frame forwarding, and then switched to domain aliasing). Also when I checked with Google's Webmaster Tools these "aliased" domains were counting as backlinks to the main site..

Worried about duplicate content penalties I've switch to allegedly "google friendly" error 301 redirects, so will wait and see what impact this has, good or bad
