123reg say my expired domain name has a charge of £75 to get it back is that right?

123reg say my recently expired .co.uk domain name of 2 months ago is now in transition period, I think that's the word, and that it will cost me £75 to get it, is that correct, or I can wait till its released and re register it.


Or am I best using a domain name grabber and capturing it back, mind you the fee for that will be same as the £75 charge wont it?

You can login to your Nominet account for that domain and do a tag change away from 123 to a different registrar, alternatively, a member here may accept it on to their tag, renew if for you for the normal £5 + VAT and then change the tag back to your registrar again.

Why are 123-reg treating a .co.uk domain the same as a .com? It doesn't cost anything more for .uk's to renew before or after expiry. Is this a mistake on the 123-reg support person or the way 123-reg operate... if so that is bloody outrageous!

Isn't this like the registrars that help themselves to expiring domains before they drop? In other words, covered by fine print in the T&C?

It may be sharp business practice, but there's almost no limit to what can be put into the contract you agree with a particular registrar. All it has to do is not conflict with Nominet's policies - where there's no policy at all there's no "conflict" and therefore it's a free for all.

The new registrar agreement that comes into force next month should put paid to the worst excesses...

You want change registrar it will then ask you for the TAG you want to change to.

Hi Mark,

Even if you updated the tag now, domains cannot be transferred whilst expired so you'd have to wait for 123-reg to release the domain name back onto the public. Until that point there sadly aren't many options as it's registered through them directly.

That's nonsense too, your domain can be transferred and renewed just fine. Take Dave Ps offer on here and you'll be sorted in 10 minutes.

They're still telling you stuff related to .com's not .uk domains. Really shitty support. Absolute bollocks.

.uk's can be renewed (at no extra cost) up to cancellation. They're also getting confused about transfer and release. Transfer is change of registrant, release is change of tag (i.e. registrar).

If you're the registrant and the domain is in the renewal required / suspended state just take up the offer here to temporarily retag the domain, renew it and have it retagged to 123-reg.

Mark-UK as the others have told you 34sp are wrong as well. If 123-reg wont release it for free it will cost you £18.50 to force the transfer and have it renewed just takes a few minutes. I'm around for the next hour or so if you want to move it to my TAG drop me a PM

I would suggest after changing tag and renewing the domain that you then keep it at a registrar other than 123-reg on principle (along with any other domains you have with 123-reg) so they lose out for trying to scam you out of £75 and then misleading you.

I had some domains with them in the past and had enough of them forcing customers to keep credit card details in the login screen and the fact that their site repeatedly got hacked.
