Happy New Year to you all.
On 1 January 2000 I registered my first uk domain (worthwhile co.uk) That was twenty years ago. Back then it was relatively easy to acquire quality domains, because there was only a limited market and not much competition. Transfers cost £35 each, using individually printed forms returned to Nominet with a signed request letter from the Registrant.
Now we have free online transfers, or pay £12. Competition is extensive and the market is shrinking amid a flood of domain extensions, as demonstrated by the current state of .uk. I thought it would be an uncomfortable process to drop thousands of domains, but with hindsight there is probably little value even in the few that were caught.
On the bright side, names like mantra and aquarius (recent sales) still deliver easy four figure sales. Fortunately, I still have many similar and lesser domains to get through before I call time on this venture.
