We are delighted to have made over 50,000 new shorter .uk registrations within the first 24 hours making it one of the fastest selling new domain releases on record.

This fantastic response beats the first day sales for the entire current batch of new generic Top Level Domains by a large margin.

Nominet COO Eleanor Bradley commented: "Consumers and brands alike are showing their trust in .uk domains, with our registration rates climbing to ten times the typical daily rate. We're thrilled with the response, which shows the excitement people feel about the shorter, sharper domain within the trusted .uk namespace."

Following British icon and tech enthusiast Stephen Fry's switch yesterday, the rate of registration climbed throughout the first working day. Brands including Sainsbury's, Bentley and Burberry were among those to register short .uk domains within the first few hours of availability.

Over ten million existing UK domain holders are being offered first choice on the shorter equivalent of their current address. We will be contacting these customers to ensure they're aware of their opportunity to exercise this right.

And of that 50K how many actual new domains? (not just a copy of .co.uk).

Probably the majority are just people registering the .uk equivalent of their .co.uk domains. We will get a better idea in the coming months when we see how many websites make the switch to the .uk.

It would be good if big brands like tesco and asda switched from using their .com to the new .uk, it would show more trust in uk domains.

how many really new strings?

Lets hope Nominet provide the data.

I would guess that of new .uk registered that are not by "rights due to owning .co.uk"
the majority registered will be .co.uk equivalent strings that expire
and catchers/ registrants, would rather than the new .uk.

I know my first .uk I registered today, was a .co.uk string
that expired the previous day to the 10th June cut off.

Sorry but all this "real name" usage on this forum causes too much confusion for me. It's bad enough with umpteen Sean's that I am still trying to differentiate and it isn't just me having this difficulty, as I found out in a telephone chat with another member recently! :)

Yes :D

Be interesting to see how quickly Google Chrome gets updated to recognise example.uk being typed into the address bar. Currently it doesn't and just goes to Google's search results listing.

Tricky balance. Every day it's not fixed is a few more clicks on Google ads, but it also makes Google look out of touch...

There is due to be an update tomorrow to the publicsuffix list (https://publicsuffix.org/list/) which will address the issue in chrome with .uk domains :)
