A few end user sales:

wow - Just got a £150 offer for a domain I sold yesterday for £90 (PublicSpeakingCoach.co.uk).
Amazingly, the offer came from a renowned public speaking coach.
But, if they are a public speaking coach, why in their right mind, would they be interested in PublicSpeakingCoach.co.uk and offer more than the first buyer?

Can someone help me out here?

How many domains have you sold that the new owners have done nothing with? I've sold a fair few like that, and I'm sure it's a similar case for most of us on here.

They'll get value out of that domain. From PPC, CTR and possibly recall too. But not really from purely an SEO standpoint.

Did they understand it when they bought it?

Agree 100%. It's NOT all about SEO in the namespace. PPC/CTR/Branding rank high as motivational factors that push buyers to invest in relevant keywords for their niche. The key here is relevance with an exact-match, telling online consumers, partners and suppiers EXACTLY what you do through the domain.

About 10-15% of domain buyers (from £100 purchases to £1M) do not end up doing much with their digital asset (sometimes for years). Some such purchases are simply fuelled with the desire to OWN the cateogry OR keep the name out of their competitors digital hands.

Yes, again, it may be worthless to you, but for a relevant business owner with a long(er) domain and/or in an inferior extension, they may prefer a small branding upgrade, or an alternative branding name to capture more leads. And no, the owner is not stupid for having made that small investment.

Branding is only relevant if it's going to become their lead domain name - their main website, their email address, their business card, etc.

PPC and CTR can be positive even for lead gen sites.

Would you be willing to post a typical thread of the sales conversations you have? I think it'd be interesting to follow - and it will put some of these questions to bed.

Please do a study of these types of co.uk domains you've sold in the past year

Id love to know at least the following

  1. What total number and % of domains sold have legitimate sites on
  2. Of those with sites on, how are they ranking in google
  3. How many are running adword campaigns

You can really show me up with how these intelligent business men have made great successes out of your bargain quality domains

Many replies I have been getting on a considerable number of domains with this fine-tuned template this past week is: Yes, we are interested. How do we proceed/go about purchasing the domain.

The buyer of our domain TrackedAccessPlatforms.co.uk, after having purchased the domain wrote back to us:

Domain names and URLs play a part in getting noticed on searches. We intend to put our Spider lift (tracked access) pages under this domain with Links back to our main website.

(The buyer was: lifterz.co.uk)

Murray, you cannot justify, on anyones behalf, the reasons and logic behind certain domain purchases. Including purchases where the buyer has not yet built a site on the domain. That is simply not your call to make. The buyer can see value in ways and areas you may not understand - that does not make it a stupid decision/purchase - remember that. It is based on key knowledge that you do not have.
There are plenty of $x,xxx weekly sales at DNjournal.com that can make your head spin - as, from OUR standpoint, the domains have no/little value. But the world/potential value of certain keywords does not revolve around what WE think or OUR mindset.

It's worth bearing in mind that there are a lot of people out there who believe that simply by 301'ing an EMD to their existing website, they will pick up more traffic.

I personally can’t understand why the guy is getting a hard time for selling some domains. Remember, a domain is worth what someone is willing to pay for it? In this case the buyers thought the domains were worth what they paid! No harm done! Good luck with more sales

They were not justifications Murray - go back and read again.
I simply mentioned just SOME of the 125 reasons that buyers purchase keyword domains.

Once again, just for emphasis: just because you do not comprehend/know how a buyer can possibly value a certain domain, in a certain niche, at a certain price - that does NOT make their decision to purchase that particular domain a stupid one.

Yes, but to be fair, that's where Murray is right. Allowing buyers to have that false impression is the sort of thing which makes the SEO industry such a shark infested nightmare.

They think they will help in search engines - they wont

They're getting the beans in their hand, but there isn't any magic there and that's what they're buying them for

Suggs, say you pay for an SEO service, you don't know much about SEO, they say "we will do directory submission, articles and blog commenting"

They do the work sure, directories are submitted to, articles are posted etc but doesn't help with anything.. did they rip you off?

What were you buying? their time to do the work or the perceived help it would give you in google?

You got what you paid for, but you didn't get what you paid for.
