Hi guys I have some questions that I would like answered if poss. I'm pretty new to the drop game and wondered if you could give me some help.

In order to catch domains in simplistic terms I understand this.

You need to get a Tag so that you can register yourself rather than rely on 3rd parties who are a lot slower.

You need to then have a list of names to monitor.

You need to run a script against the DAC monitoring the names for when they drop.

You then also need this script if poss to send an email to Nominet registering the name as soon as poss.

I think thats the basics however I have seen some software from Dave Beasley and wondered if this was the software/scripts that can be used.

Tag Admin does this perform the function of checking and registering when a name drops ??

Can you only get the scripts by asking someone to code for you or create yourself - is there any good open source ones etc....

I'm failing miserably on the script side of things so any pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Krug

You're almost there... You need a tag to be able to register names direct with Nominet. Any old idiot can be a tag holder! However in order to get access to the DAC and also to get reduced rate registrations (£5 + VAT) you need to be a member. Members can have many tags (but only one DAC subscription).

You then setup a script to query the DAC with name/s you're interested in. As soon as the DAC tells you it's available, you then need to fire off an email to attempt to register the name.

I'm not aware of any open source scripts to do the job but, as a coding exercise, a basic DAC script is pretty simple. What language are you writing in?

Not sure how Dave's stuff works - no doubt he'll be along shortly to explain!

Hi thanks very much for the explanation much appreciated.

I have only really worked with php for web scripting in the past - not sure if thats the right sort of language to create a DAC script.

I was interested in Daves as it runs on Windows which is my main OS on all systems I use.

PHP is just fine, although some may argue that you can shave off precious milliseconds by using something like compiled C.

And you can of course use PHP under Windows.
