So I've just got back into record collecting - all my domain sales go right on records at the moment - mainly funk / soul / jazz 45s and LPs from the 60/70s.

Anyone else?

Mine goes into sports cars, the engine soundtrack is all I need :p

I wouldn't say I actively collect, but I've ended up with both my own collection and my Dad's. some gems in there, like the infamous original Electric Ladyland issue (NSFW google it if you don't know!).

It means I am sat with a whole load of Beatles, Stones, Who and Kinks 45s. Whenever collectors & values come up on the news it is always LPs, but I have always kind of assumed that surely the singles have some value too. Something for me to "get around" to investigating......

Depends on the 45s really - some northern soul records go for crazy figures.

It's really promos and first releases that sell for a lot of money - like this one: http://www.discogs.com/sell/release/4017046?ev=rb

Re-issues tend to go for a lot less, the re-issue of that £4k album goes for £50.

i will have to dig through them and get them valued one day. i doubt i would want to part with any of them, but some numbers i have seen around for certain issues make you think "i could just live with the CD or download"!

Sadly, the majority of LPs by Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Elvis, and anyone else who was 'big' are worth next to nothing.

Reason being, back then (many, many years ago........) the artists had to sell alot to get onto the hit parade, or the top 40. Not like today, where the number 1 today, on sales, wouldn't have cracked the top 40 back in the 60's.Also alot of people kept their LPs, unless they left them on radiators, or the dog got hold of them or something similar.

This now means that there are alot of the 'standard' release issues still around. Which means the values are lower. Beatles Hard Days Night is just a fiver on eBay,

Get a special release one though, or a first press one that no one else has spotted, and your laughing :)

Personally, I collect mine, record it onto mp3, and let the LP go. Still get the LP sound, but in mp3, and can be listened to anywhere.

**Posh beat me to it as I was writing a response**

well, they're not things i would be actively looking to sell. i guess, though, with each passing year even the most widely produced records increase in value due to some being damaged or destroyed.

I know a few people that do. They go to the charity shops and find a few bargains. I don't think I could get into it because records take up too much space. My Dad has some interesting albums from the 60s, like a Sargent Pepper album, is that worth much?

i think the original Sgt Pepper came with all sorts of inserts and freebies - things like "press out" costumes so that the kids could dress like the band appeared on the artwork. i would imagine that a mint / v.good quality copy of the record with all the extras would fetch a few quid.

meanwhile, it seems that the rarest Beatles album of all time is coming up for sale. as in the one record that can be shown without question to have belonged to Lennon himself :
