Anyone live in Durham area?

I am thinking of moving from London to Durham area, Sick of London, another kid on the way, closer to wife's family, buy a bigger house.

Would appreciate areas to avoid buying in, or any recommended area's.

Where abouts in Durham does the family live? I know north durham well, like Chester le Street, Stanley, Consett etc.. Not too hot on south durham though.

With the job you do Mally, anywhere you are not familar with it a good area imo.

I live in a student house in Gilesgate, Durham City. I don't know the general area too well, but the city is beautiful and I know my way around the city centre. I have friends who have lived here 40 years so if you see anywhere you like and want the area checking out I'd be happy to have a look for you.

I'm originally from South-West Durham, so know that area quite well. You'll get more house for your money if you avoid living in central Durham. Depending what your requirements are you may prefer living somewhere like Consett/Chester-le-street as you'll be a shorter drive (under 30 minutes) to Newcastle.

Though even where my family lives in Crook you're only 45 minute drive from Newcastle, 20 minutes from Durham.

Thanks for the info everyone, it looks like we are going to go for Sunderland as it's proximity is good in regard to the cities and the coast for the kids, also looks like a nice place to live by all accounts.
