interesting times ahead... still undecided whether this will be good or bad. no doubt there will be some crappy new extensions hyped to the moon and back.

Waste of cash for applicants and people rushing to register god only knows what in various extensions.

More than that, it will be confusing for the average Joe.

From what I have read it could also lead to things like :

buy.coke
eat.haribos
watch.bbc

la la la...although not sure if they'd allow sniff.coke??

How do you advertise a new extension domain SUCCESSFULLY offline (where 90% of ad spend still takes place)? My theory is that you probably can't, regardless of your ad budget, as all around you every other ad ends in .co.uk or .com

What will probably work is .facebook where they give out names to go with user IDs (if indeed that was their plan) but in general the .anything launch is a recipe for an endless series of marketing face-plants...

Hmm, not sure if this is a good idea, it would probably just lead to confusion for the public.

But if it does go ahead, I most certainly would not like to be holding a large portfolio of .co.uk and .com domains. Interesting times ahead I think.

don't think its a question anymore of if it will happen... its happening for sure....

I think it's brilliant! Once the next extension process has been going for a while and has been shown to fail (just as it has for .travel, .jobs, .asia, and so on) then that removes a MASSIVE uncertainty that has been hovering over the market for years. I can't remember when the idea of .anything was first mooted as a serious proposition, but it must be a good 3 or 4 years ago at least!

Can only see this benefiting massive brands and those with huge budgets. The average microsite joe shouldn't be effected too badly - well at least I hope!!

Will google/msn etc give preference in their search engines to their own dot google and dot msn extentions etc??? Thus, as a consequence, weakening the value of the keyword .co.uk extention.

I don't think many will be opened to the public. Maybe geo ones like .NYC .London etc may go public, but with conditions such as your business must be based there. Like bikerepair.London, no point in having it if your based in manchester!

Maybe then it maybe just like a directory type setup. Where it will list all the bike repair shops in london. Pay a fee get a link. Especially useful for geo SERPS.
