Can anyone recommend a good computer backup solution?
(I haven't looked at anything yet)

We need it to work with 5 machines simultaneously & preferably to automatically update if possible.
Don't require masses amounts of storage but obv. needs to be reliable.
Budget: Around £500

Thanks in advance.
Mike

Consider a NAS with two, maybe four hard drives in a specific RAID structure. Will allow network access by multiple PC's and create redundancy against file loss. May be a stretch to achieve £500 though, but I couldn't live without mine.

Thanks Ian
How does that work?

Would it require a drive for each computer?
Does it work via WIFI?
How much?

Search the forum for Synology NAS there were an indepth discussion when I was upgrading mine.

They work over network cable or wifi, they can back up many computers, phones, laptops, etc.

Prob easier to google them..

I would suggest a 4 bay system running raid 5 (1 disk tolerence), if super critical maybe an 5/8 bay Raid 6 (2 disk tolerence) device.

Its basically a mini computer, which uses X number of drives as a back up / storage device.

Thanks Ian

You'd need a hard drive in each PC to run an operating system, but that isn't related to a NAS, just for local storage.

As said above, research Synology NAS options, they do a few and will allow network access over Ethernet or Wifi (depending on model).

I'd say NAS's are basically network servers for non-IT professionals, which about sums me up!

One thing to remember is that the NAS will be open to theft / fire and so on just like the local PC's so if the data is important, also consider off-site backup.

Veeam is free to back up physical machines - not "free because it's shit" but rather "free because their core market is backing up virtual machines"

In my experience it's fast and painless and the rescue restore works a treat (boot off CD/DVD/USB stick and restore your backup over the network)

If you choose Synology, set it up to automatically sync your files to Google Drive. I've done it with our home photos and I can either add them to the Synology and they'll appear on Drive or vice versa.

You can also then use an app or browser to access the files anywhere.

Happy to share my setup.
